i need a rear that's posi, not a wallet killer (moser), and will hold up to a decent amount of power. I've got an 83 limited, with a pretty snotty 455 in it... ONE WHEEL PEEL, boored already. i wanna hook up, or at least smoke'm both! HELP!

Located on Long Island NY. can't travel to far to pick up, and have a limited budget!

help, i want to love my car! but it's booring when you got all the noise in the world and you can't get any of it to the pavement!

Save your money and do it right the first time - 8.5 or a 9in

Same here, I did my 9" for basically nothing.
Housings pre-welded at Quicktime Performance for around 300. (Bolt-in) They also have the Moser 31 splines for a real good price as well.
You can pick up a decent 3rd member, with a working posi for about the same. Then upgrade to a Detroit Tru-trac later as more cash comes in. Plus you will love how easily the Ford goes together, great design in my opinion.

Hey, i've only been able to find 9 inches that'll run me around 3 grand all in all.... I was looking for something i could pick up for WAY less! like a GN rear...

If you know how i could get a 9 inch in my car for cheap, PLEASE SEND ME DETAILS!!!!!

This might get you started, if your not real handy with the welder this is the way to go plus it saves a load of time figuring your pinion angle and making sure your connections are in the right place. Getting a used GN rear may be a close second in price. The housing alone is 345 +-? This is the way I went and it saved me a ton of money and time in the long run. I have a used 31 spline makeshift posi unit I could let go for cheap. I ended up putting in a TruTrac. Call your local bone yard, should be able to get a center section cheap. Ford only make them for a half century (there is a ton of them out there.) Or you could get a complete rebuilt posi unit for around 5 bills.

I will look for some of my old postings to give you an idea of what I went through.

Here is there website in Iowa.

Oh sorry, one more thing, all in all including my D-trac, it cost me around 950$, but that was with some new axles that had GM ends on them so I could reuse my drums with 3" studs.

nastynavy has one what for sale? a GN rear? somone has already contacted me about buying a used GN rear... 800 bucks,,, said the spiders are worn looking though... worth it or no? it'd be a days trip for me to go get it, but doable...?

I'd realy like a 9 inch... I'm no good with a welder, not yet at least, so i'd need some realy detailed help. where to go, who to call, specific parts... yah know? brakes, and all that jazz....

You can buy a 9in housing for $345 no fabricating needed-bolt in. Check "e" bay and you can pick one up in various stages. I bought mine from Moser a few years back and paid under $700 for the housing w/ 31 splined axles, long wheel studs, housing studs, and bearing retainers and you can pick the the housing ends you want. Seeing your on a budget and the season is coming to an end, you have all winter to to look for a bargin to pop up.

Why does every1 lean towards a ford 9 inch? I bought my 8.5 for 700 bucks and raced it for three years before i broke and that was only because i was hard headed and sprayed it off the line. Even after that for less than 900 i was able to buy strange axles gear and spool and havent lookd back since.(can you say 1.31 60 ft in a 3850lb car). If you can find a decent 8.5 get it unless you plan on having 800 ft lbs of tourqe tommorow you wont break it and when you do it very affordable everything i ever read on a 9inch says it will "technically " slow you down due to more friction in the turning. A 11 or 12 sec car thats way overkill

I went with the 9in because I was able to put everything together brand new for under $1000. They have built 9's for so long the parts are cheap and I like how easy they are to work on and yes durable - no problems in 6 years. Don't get me wrong, the 8.5 is a great piece and I would highly suggest buying one, just don't be putting money into a 7.5

no question the 8.5 gm is the least hassle, as long as you can get a drive shaft, i have a 9inch ford in my 87, a local guy narrowed it and tig welded my 7.5 brackets on, and we made new ones for the top control arms,i think i have around 1500 into it, but it does have alot of good stuff in there, 31 spline currie axles with long 1/2 inch studs, 31 spline traction loc rebuilt, nodular third member, currie disc brakes, these are basically explorer brakes, but i did have to buy the torino axle ends to fit them, competition engineering back brace welded on, ...if i had to do it agian i would look into the strange engineering axle, its a fabricated piece that is a bolt in, they can also set you up with everything you would need, i have a real healthy 455 in the car, and i don't think i would ever have to worry about this rear, i spent extra money so i wouldn't have to do it again. hope this helps

i have a mile of gravel and its hard to keep everything clean!

lilbowtie, What springs did you use with the 9"? I could not use the orignal ones as the larger diameter of the housing made the rear too high. I cut some down but I'm not happy with them.

I looked into this some time ago... wanted a good rear on a budget.

Bottom line is that rear end parts aren't exactly cheap. Lots of options and ways to spend big cash.

I ened up with an 8.5 out of a skylark (no c-clips) loaded with 3:42 gears and a spool (stock 28 spline axles). I got 'iceman' adj. upper and solid lowers to hook it up. I didn't mod the rear at all, and it fit with a little "convincing". Some say this setup can cause binding, but I am very pleased with the way it launches/rides at the track and on the street. I have roughly $1000 into it.

BUT! before I did this swap.. I ran the stock 7.5 with a mini-spool. Other people will warn it will break or it won't drive well...
Chances are it will break only if you actually get traction, and you really only notice the chirping when your in a parking lot. For $100 I had both tires smoking and a greasy grin on my face with the stock rear end! A temporary fix, but without slicks it's budget friendly.

    PS
My brother runs a high 12 sec quarter mile(400ci sb with 150 shot of Nitrous in a camaro) on a 7 5/8" rear with welded spiders.... THAT is the cheapest way to go, and it's held up for years!

I used the stock springs and I picked up less than 1 inch on my hight. Matter a fact I later put in a heaver set of moog's that I had for my GS.
