Had my home plumbed to include a natural gas line for my new BBQ. I need to add a double end male 3/8 threaded fitting to mate with my Weber Gas Grill quick connect. What kind of thread sealant should I use? Seems all the current fittings used some sort of liquid or paste sealant but my local ACE store said the RED Teflon tape would work fine as its for gas fittings. True?
PTFE paste. (I use Oatey white) I prefer the paste to tape. Yeah, it is about as messy as anti-seize and one drop will cover the earth better than Sherman Williams, but it is great stuff. (Cleans up with isopropyl alcohol fine)
The PTFE tape I was sold is the Red on which I believe is incorrect. As far as checking for leaks I would have to cap the pipe first as Weber provides a quick connect like that on an air hose for the supplied line on their grill.
Max of 2 wraps with the yellow gas tape. Always check with soapy water but make sure there is enough soap to make it bubble. Worked on a hirise and the guy spent a week looking for a leak on a 50 psi test . I asked to see his spray bottle. Not enough soap . Added more and he found the leak in 10 minutes. Lol
We used "Leak Tec" on aircraft pneumatic systems and a good substitute is 1 part glycerin, 2 parts dish soap (Dawn), 7 parts water and you will have lots of bubbles.
Interesting enough, I just bought a natural gas grill and the instructions for the quick connect to the gas pipe stated no tape or pipe dope. Installed and used the soapy water to test for leaks and it was good.
well yellow tape seal worked fine. do you guys leave the main gas valve that the bbq is connected to on or off when not cooking?
Its always easy and quick to check for leaks with a lighter. I would not do that to an obvious leak though. Need to use common sense with that one. Butt that is safer than checking for a high pressure steam leak with your hand.
A plumber friend of mine also used the lighted match to check for leaks even when he hooked up a gas line for my gas stove, many years ago.
