Picked up this all original, survivor Schwin disc brake apple krate. Maybe I ought to call it a living room find! It's an all original survivor Schwinn Apple Krate. March 73 production. Rear disc brake, front drum. Been sitting for years. Had a bug to get another after I sold my lemon krate to buy my nickel 357 Python... Plan is to blow it apart, clean, polish, lube and adjust it all. Maybe recover the seat...Then find it a loving home.
Oh man, my brother had one of those growing up... It got stolen from me, in person, when I rode it to a hobby shop (Fields) in a rough section of Buffalo (that means really rough). There were a bunch of kids looking at it while I was shopping, so i waited to leave. They apparently waited nearby until I came out and unlocked the bike, then shoved me off if it and took it. Quite memorable. They actually tried to talk me off of it first, but that didn't work... Also, FYI that shifter will damage your delicate parts if you aren't careful.
DUDE !!! that thing is awesome. I think you should display it at MCACN. You know they have a entire area for showing old bikes like this. I really dig it.
Thry make a seat cover kit or for 275, I csn send mine in to get recovered. You think Buick guys are nuts, the krate guys are just as bad with correct fasteners and details.
Fields Hobby is now in Cheektowaga NY, my brother knows the owner, not sure if its the same family. I grew up in the rough side of Buffalo and had someone try and steel my bike from me and it turned into a wrestling match (two 8 year olds) and I got to keep my bike. Not sure if it was like CJays, all I remember is it had a shifter and was gold with a gold metallic seat.
Looks senior citizen living room kept. I think Dave Tumas has played with these, you may want to PM him. I think they make a bike rack that works off a GSX spoiler.
Great find. That would look good with my wagon. MMMM. I had a late 60s Schwinn Fast back five speed. when I was like 5. It had a huge sissy bar. Had a hell of a time learning to use the hand brakes.
I have a Schwinn Collegiate 5 speed up in my attic. Bought it new when I was in my late teens. It has one of those headlights operated by a little generator that contacts the tire. It's the same color as my GS!
