Well, a guy with a mullet would actually run this POS off the road if given half a chance:

One gets the impression that someone has some significant manhood issues with a wing that size on a car like that...I guess that's one way to get that thing to spin the front wheels, particularly since it's likely an automatic.

PRO STREET VEGA “BAD BOY” Street or Track Low Actual Miles

This car was THE COVER CAR for the magazine HOT RODDING on the may 1989 issue. This is a very professionally built 1973 Vega Pro Street version called VEGABOND and I will give you a description of the article. The article began with the car featured on the cover and then on page 3 also page 82 and then continued on page 106. This is an incredible article on a very exquisite car.

The article went like this. Page three “ON THE COVER” “ We went to Phoenix to capture Tito De La Penda’s “Under A Grand Vega,” which is just as nifty as a slightly detailed engine compartment in Tim Thaeyer’s Thunderbird shown elsewhere in this issue. Photo’s by Les “Wow, my first cover!” Bidrawn and Steve “ I hate Sushi” Reyes

Page 82 a complete page with four pictures and the ariticle by Chris Hemer stating. “We’ve got some Vegas,” said Ellis Taylor the proprietor of F&L Auto Wrecking in Mesa, Ariz. For what seemed like a very long time now, Tito De La Pena had been looking for a decent’ 73 Vega that he could transform into a daily-driven street hero. “Come on down and have a look, “Ellis continued, “because we’re just gonna crush ’em up.”

Tito arrived at F&L only a short while later to examine Ellis’ collection. Kicking his way through the yard, he looked at one vega then another. Both were to far gone to consider for his project. Then he saw it - the car he had been looking for. Walking up to it, he noticed that the body was almost perfect, and the engine and transmission had already been removed. Tito began to smile, as he looked inside to determine the condition of the interior. To his amazement, it was in perfect shape, including the seats, which are normally ripped. The odometer showed only 30,000 miles. Perfect!.

Tito wasted no time and took the car over to hi buds at Key Engineering for a no-holds-barred Pro Street treatment, including narrowed 2x3 frame rails and eight point cage, fashioned from mild steel. A narrowed Ford nine-inch spinning 456 gears was hung in place and was fitted with Key Engineering four link, Chassis Engineering coil overs, track locater and a driveshaft loop for safety. The front suspension remains stock, with the exception of shortened front coils to achieve the ride height.

Very little body work was needed, but the moulding holes had to be filled, and the wheel wells stretched for the appropriate Pro Street rubber, Bruce Birmingham of southwest Auto Painting in Tempe, Ariz., came to the rescue, preparing the car for what was to come next: a blinding yellow paint job by Denny Bloom with graphics by Ty Woodhall, both of whom work at Autographx in Mesa, Ariz.

With the outside complete and looking’ good, the interior work was next on Titos’ check list. For this, he contacted Richard Fimbres over at Coulter Cadillac, who not only re stitches Caddy interiors, but also does custom work on the side. Richard reupholstered the flow Fit seats in black velour and laid down the black loop carpeting. A ‘76 Cougar console was adapted to the Vega’s trans tunnel, and houses a Hurst Quarter Stick, as well as Stewart-Warner gages, with all tin and fab work by Tito.

By now, Tito had plenty of time to think about what he wanted in the way of power. Since driving the car every day to work had to be taken into consideration, he decided to go the “rad but reliable” route, and had Larry Westover of the Car Care Company, of Mesa, put together an appropriate mill. Starting with a .030-over four-bolt 350, Larry added a steel crank, Chevy “pink” rods and TRW forged pistons at a streetable 9:1 compression ratio. Chevy 2.02 heads were ported and polished, with valve actuation coming from a Competition Cams stick with .510 lift and 292 degrees of duration. Induction is by a single 750-cfm vacum secondary Holley atop a Holley Contender manifold with ignition by Mallory and headers by Don Hardy. The tranny choice was simple-a Larry Westover-modified ’Glide with Hughs 3200-rmp stall converter and Russell trans cooler.

Rest assured, Tito finally found what he wanted. Now comes the fun part-deciding what you want to do next.

Please call for details or additional pictures, Asking only $34,900.00.

This is far below replacement cost on a build like this today.

    Showing only 39,060 actual miles.

Little illustration on the rear of the trunk lid -- is he trying to impress us with how strong his brakes are? Or did his front end collapse?

Based on the door handle being crooked is it possible i could talk Tito into $34,799?? ;) I kind of like the paint job as well. I could rock the striped paint job no doubt
