I understand how it works. I used a poorly worded example with the $20. I was just trying to say that if my max bid was $300 and I see it goes for $320, whether I lost out two days or two seconds before the end, good for them. As you say, they may have bid $5000 for all I know. The volume of sniping got old, but its the nickel & dimer's that really ticked me off, because there I had a very good idea what their bidding style and max bid was.

Maybe the best way for me to explain it is to go thru a scenario. Lets say there's an item out there that I'm willing to pay around $300 for and the item increments at $5.00. A friend taught me to never bid in even or common numbers, so I bid $311.97. I hold high bidder status with a minute to go at $265. All of a sudden, I'm now high bidder at $300. Someone obviously entered a last-minute bid. Then I'm high bidder at $303, $307, $311, and in the closing seconds I lose out by $.03 to a $312 bid. Remember now, the increment is $5. If the snipe entered your hypothetical $5000 bid, I would have lost to $315 right away & that would have been the end of it.

The proxy bidding isn't going to bid randomly by $3 or $4, its increment is $5. The only way I know to do that is increasing your max bid to that amount. One would like to assume it was multiple people trying to snipe it, but the bid history would invariable show one other name mostly driving the price. He had to be sitting there changing his bid repeatedly in that last minute to figure out my max and beat me. At that point he ain't putting in his best offer & letting the chips fall, he's simply out to steal it away for absolute lowest amount over my bid he can. Hence my theft reference. Smart shopping on his part, sure, but a royal pain in the ### to me.

I laughed it off the first time it happened. It wasn't funny anymore after the fourth or fifth. Downright maddening after the tenth. Combined with all the other auctions I lost in the last seconds to 'conventional' sniping (probably 80% or more), I decided e-bay was too irritating for me. Out of the auctions I did win, there's only a few items I felt I paid a fair price for. The rest I was mad enough to put an absurd max bid on. I may still sell there, but now-days, if it doesn't offer "Buy It Now", I ain't buyin'.

I realize sniping is all but required today. For those of you with the patience and the time to sit there & snipe, have at it. No flaming, no hard feelings, just consider me out.

Sniping is the only way to win on ebay anymore... unless you're willing to bid early at 10X the value of something.

I snipe all the time... and get sniped all the time. Thats the way the game is played. :Do No:

Just remember, you never know how deep the pockets are for the guy you are bidding against. Sniping or no Sniping.

Seems like some ebayers treat it like a real life auction, where the price is called out and they raise their hands or paddles to bid. They must be posting just enough to be the highest bidder at that minute, not the most they are willing to pay. If someone didn't realize it was a proxy auction, then I can see how they could get upset. I just put in my maximum bid and wait till the auction ends.

I think what it all boils down to, is that so-called "sniping" is a fact of life on ebay. Either play by the rules of ebay, or don't. But there's no point in making public complaints here about another V8 member, who does play by the ebay rules in order to win an auction. :Smarty:

I know what you guys mean about those snipers...one minute I'm the high bidder at $27,950 on that Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese, then next thing I know, some casino snipes me...

    Who me?

There's nothing wrong with posting frustrations about sniping, but I personally don't see any good reason to single out and name another well-known and respected V8 member for sniping, when it is a common practice by so many others here, and is within ebay rules. :Do No:
