Ebay is tough especially on dial up. As far as sniping goes it is the nature of the beast.
I myslef set a limit on what I will pay, set the proxy bid and walk away. No more bidding "wars" for me.

I had been bidding on KB locks last week and they went for more than a new purchase item would sell for! The KB name is not that valuable to me that I would pay more with shipping then buying a set from TA....

I've shot myself in the foot on over paying on ebay more than once. No more.

Man, I'm glad some of you guys don't go to the dealer auto auctions. You wouldn't believe what goes on there. When you are trying to bid on a car at the right price and SHILLS and RETAIL customers (who sneak in with other dealers) are bidding against you........It'll send you home CRYIN' !!!!!! :ball: :ball: :ball: :ball: :ball: :ball: :ball: :ball: :ball: :ball: :ball: :ball: :ball:

I've quit e-baying. I got sniped too many times. I don't care if the guy snipes & outbids me by $20 or some other 'real' money. Fine, he was willing to pay more, he wins, good for him. I'll adjust my thought of what a reasonable price for the item is & bid on a similar one later.

Its the %($#@)$%s that "outbid" me by pocket change with a second to go that drove me away. I lost out on probably a dozen auctions within the last seconds and I bet the total amount extra I'd have had to spend on all of those auctions combined was less than $5. That's not 'outbidding' anymore, that's damn near theft. :af:

    Greg,

You must not understand how ebay proxy bidding works. The only way you'd get sniped by a large amount of money, is if it was a very high dollar item. Thus the minimum "next bid" would be $20 over the last bid - unless the sniper only outbid you by $.25, which would be lucky for him since he has no idea what your max bid would have been.

If the minimum bid is currently $15, you can bid $5000 if you want to. But it will only show your max bid as being the amount of the minimum difference over the 2nd highest bidder. That being the case, the sniper would have to bid over $5000, to beat you. If he bid $5001, then he'd beat you buy $1 because that was your highest bid. But if he bid $10,000, then he would win with $5000 + the minimum difference at that dollar amount (probably at least $50 and maybe $100). I haven't taken the time to remember minimum next bids at different price levels.

The way I see it, if you can't be there in the closing seconds, bid the most you would ever spend on that particular item if it were at a store down the street. If you win - great, if you lose - you didn't pay more than you would have. You don't know how much that sniper really bid anyway - just that it was more than you bid.

I snipe all the time. 99% of the time I lose. I almost don't even care who it was that sniped me, because I would snipe them if I could. People that don't like sniping are a lot of times, people who are attempting to snipe and got out sniped. Not that it happened in this case however.

Don't sweat it George. It's a cold cruel world out there, full of snipers. It's a sniper eat sniper world.

    That's exactly right Greg.

It's impossible to outbid someone by a ton of money because ebay will only enter as much of the bid you place as it needs to outbid the current high bidder. Even if you bid a lot more, it doesn't use what it doesn't need, only what is needed to outbid the current high bidder. If the current high bidder bids again, but not as much as you bid previously, your "proxy" bid will still instantaneously outbid him again until he finally outbids your proxy.

When your proxy bid is outbid by someone else, it will only outbid you by the bid increment set forth by ebay for that auction. Even if he bid $100,000,000,000.00

In my own opinion, that's what ebay is about (BIDDING till you Win)
    It's a doggy dog world!

I started sniping 18 months ago when I lost a GSX with 45 seconds to go. But that was MY fault and no one else. If I really want something I watch it to the end. If not, I place a bid and let it run out. After all, it is called ebay "auction"!

Only kidding (sorry Jim), really it should be done by late spring or early summer. We are very happy. How are you doing & will you be at the BPG NATS this year?
