This subject has come up many times in the past (I even put out a poll once).

Sniping is playing within the rules as set out by ebay.

I agree with Steve, sniping is how the game is played, like it or not. No one has to feel they got screwed by a sniper, if they simply put in their maximum proxy bid in advance. That way you don't pay any more than other bidders push your bid up, until your max is reached. If I'm willing to pay $100, and not a penny more, for an ebay item, I'll put in an early lower bid, to show my interest, then on the last day or sooner, I'll enter my max proxy bid. If I win, that's cool. If not, it just means someone else was willing to pay more than I was. jmho

    Sniping........

    Dan,

I tend to agree with you. I quit purchasing off of ebay as much as possible. I hate what it has done to the restoration market. I know that it makes those hard to find parts more accessible, but it also makes it too simple for some fat-cat to sit back and pay more for parts because he won't (or in some cases, can't) get to a swap meet, or salvage yard, and purchase them himself. If you are a seller, then it's okay cause you are gonna get stupid money out of alot of your parts. I have sold on ebay and gotten more than i thought the items were worth. Guess we all play the game. Anymore, i just put my max bid in and walk away. If i get it, fine, if i don't .....another will come along. I still hit every salvage yard i can find though. That is why i got into this hobby to begin with....I love rooting thru swap meets and salvage yards.

    Just my .02

There will always be another one.....no matter what it is!
I saw a NOS fender today, a NOS speed-minder face dial & some other interesting pieces. I'll look at what I want & then decide what I really need. The " need " list is relatively short.
I'll normally put in a number, my max., & forget about it.
I get an e-mail after it ends....win or lose. My max. is just that...no more.
I'll keep it high sometimes to ensure I have a good - great chance of winning.
Somebody wants to pay an extra $1-10 for it, it's theirs. No holds barred on the open market. No hard feelings either.

Thats pretty much the name of the game on Ebay. I just lost out on some defroster ductwork I needed. Someone outbid me the last few seconds of the auction. Oh well, I'll wait for the next one to show up. Im really starting to like the "buy it now" option. No waiting, no snipers.

I feel everyones pain, and agree with both sides I guess. I was sniped a while back when I wanted a part. It stings for a minute, but goes away. I am sure nothing personal is meant. I do the buy it now thing as much as possible. :)

On ebay, the name of the game is bidding, lose or win.

George...I was just breaking your b***s! Im a sniper myself. Its the only way to get the item most times. I cant tell you how many times Ive lost stuff because someone outbid me the last 15 seconds of the auction. If you cant beat them join them. I say let the best man win. What I do now is open up the auction in two windows. The first window I place my bid and get it to the point where it says "place bid" . The other window, I keep refreshing till it get to the last 20 seconds or so. At the very last second, I hit "place bid". Works 99% of the time.

LOL... you ain't even lying. Had to upgrade to a cable modem just so I'd stand a fighting chance on ebay.

Got tired of only bidding on auctions that were ending while I was gonna be at work :Dou: :Dou:

My Ebay is the same as my ID here...

Hi.. My name is Jeff.... and... I... snipe.

    Dan,

I am a little confused. If you bid the most you felt the part was worth 5days before the auction ended, and someone outbid you that day, would you be still be mad because you lost? What is the difference then if he outbid you 30 seconds before the auction ended? Either way, he outbid you, which means he was willing to pay more than you were. That is why auctions sell to the HIGHEST bidder. Not the first bidder.

If you answer is, "If I knew 5 days ago he was going to bid more, I would have bid more",then shame on you. You should have bid the most you were willing to spend the first time, and had no regrets. That is the key to eBay. Bid all that you are willing to spend and let the cards fall where they may.
