If your ignition system requires a starter-solenoid "R" terminal, you either buy a ministarter with an "R" terminal, or you add a diode to the R-terminal wire, and attach it to the "S" terminal.

Just assume I'm a moron and don't know what I'm doing hahaha. Did I do it right? Any chance you have a picture of what that looks like? Do you use any shims or is it a direct replacement?

That solenoid has both the "S" and the "R" terminals. You may/may not need the "R" terminal. GM pretty-much ended the R terminal when they adopted HEI. Having it doesn't hurt. Not having it isn't a tragedy. There's the diode work-around.

Make CERTAIN that the "red" power cable isn't going to contact the small terminal it's covering. It's also pretty close to the big terminal below it--consider twisting the red cable so it's well away from the other terminals. You do NOT want that cable vibrating down into contact with something else.

Where are the two smaller wires connected?

Thanks for the information! I'm going to be running a Hyperspark ignition with a holley sniper, so I should be good without the yellow "R" wire. Yes, the two smaller wires were already spliced together in one ring terminal. I'll be sure to position and cinch them down so they do not contact anywhere

    67gsman I'm not fast, I'm not slow....I'm half-assed

Running a stock ignition on mine, so need both S and R terminals. Anyone know what mini starter has both terminals ?
Heard about the diode work around but does anyone have specifics on how to hook up and diode details. Thanks

Very simple, just need to position the stripe on the diode towards the ignition coil,

Given that Buicks take the same starter as Chevys with the smaller flywheel/flexplate, you've got options for a ministarter that actually has an "R" terminal.

Details and part numbers attached. Remy has been absorbed into some other conglomerate, no promises on finding actual Remy parts any more...but the numbers should cross to something that's still available.

Here is a link to the one I bought for that very reason. It has been on the car for over 3 years without any issues.

I just ordered a TA 2022. TA lowered price just recently from $261 to $135. Not sure what they were a couple years ago but that’s lower than the Powermaster XS 9511 now.
