The bearing was already well greased..I went over the inner axle tube with some emery paper.
Then cleaned and greased the inner axle tube where the race seats.
The spacer sent to me by Brian Trick was placed in the tube, then I slid in the axle along with the one piece bearing and race. It slid in like a glove.

However, I still have excessive in and out play on the drivers side. It's no different than before except, the up and down play is gone.

I haven't done anything with the passenger's side yet.

Scratch that last post. I'm an idiot.

I went back to the garage to look at it and think about it. I picked up my shop towel and one of the spacers that Brian Trick sent me fell out of the rag. It turns out, the only way these spacers work is if you actually install them.
So, I removed the driver's side axle, installed the spacer, re-installed the axle, now its all good. Thanks Brian!
I took a chance and installed the passenger side axle without the added spacer, because the passenger side never had any in and out play.
Now, it's all tight and right.
I'll put the new wheel cylinders and brakes on tomorrow night and see if all is well.

You might want to do a mock up,with the spacer in the passenger side.Sometimes you can install the axle, and everything is snug, but if there is a void behind the bearing race,it will eventually move over until it seats against the shoulder in the tube, which will again cause play.
Another thing you could do(if you are able)is to measure the depth in each axle tube, and see if they are the same,or one is deeper.

    Thanks Guys.

I'm going to do the wait and see approach on the passenger side. The rear is all together. But...now the prop valve is stuck in the rearward position not allowing fluid to the new wheel cylinders. Since the car is nosed in my tiny garage.. I'm done for a few days.
Sucks because I was trying to make the last car show of the season this Friday..

Well, I think the name of the place is Faith Church.....its the large church on the south side of 30, just east of the Meramec river.

    You going?

Thinking about it, but it's a 45 minute drive...and it will be guaranteed to be a complete circus.

echh,,, guess what? I'm right back where I started.

Got the rear all together, got the prop valve squared away. Took the car for a ride yesterday. It was a great day for a cruise. I probably drove about 40 miles.

Came home and the driver's side axle seal is leaking. No end play at all. The passenger's side, so far, is OK.

    I guess I'll be looking for a 712146 seal.
