Machine hub on ATI SuperDamper?

Anyone do this to get the internal balance damper closer to the motor as ATI suggests? (about 3/4")
Makes it easier to time it so the damper marks are under the timing cover marks. Also might be better for motor having weight closer to crank.

Make your own pointer that bolts to the original timing mark.

You would create a few issues by doing that. Would the balancer bolt bottom-out on the crank before touching the balancer? What about pulley alignment?

Too bad ATI can't make it right from the getgo....and make us also have to use a 3 bolt BBC pulley.

Here's what they say in their catalog:

"Hubs may be machined on the crank gear end when using the shorter internal balance units to move the damper closer to the engine. 403-455 is .725” forward of the OEM location."

I told them years ago about the 403 error....they admitted they meant 430. I suggested they say "400-455". Oh well my job used to be technical editor....can't help it....

I tried to use an ati external balancer on my last 464 for the same reasons.....chevy pattern for crank trigget........that dampner wanted ALOT of weight to added to crank in an area where you couldn't physically add it.............the romac needed weight removed which is what were expecting to see since the pistons were lighter

Yeah this one is internal and aluminum vs the steel external one.

Its definitely something that makes since as could be done. I think I would set it up and go slow. I dont see it effecting balance.......especially if this was done b4 finial assembly balance........just not sure how far it can cut b4 hitting the cover

I use the ATI internal dampener and had issues with the large fillet on the hub coming in contact with the seal and ended up having to counterbore the timing chain cover deeper to gain enough clearance away from the seal. So I could see that being a issue if you cut down the hub. That was with a Crower crankshaft on my aluminum block. I’m putting together my iron block now so when I get there I’ll check to see if it’s the same.

The ATI unit for Oldsmobile also has the 3-bolt Chevy pulley. It probably saves them from machining a designated part. They can take the Chevy hub and machine it for a few different engines.

Yeah, I don't know what they are talking about....I only have maybe 1/4" from large fillet to seal. Like I said be nice if they could just make it right but then if they did that it would cost us more....

I use ATI and I just have them make it use a 6 bolt pulley. Just call them. They can do whatever you like. But of course you have to pay for it.

Ditch the 6 bolt pattern as I did. Way more options with Chevy pattern to run drive accessories from crank ie MSD etc

atisup.jpg Was yours machined? Mine sets off the timing tab far enough I can put my finger in there.

Is yours pulled all the way on?????? Some of those aftermarket unit fit beyond tight......without a true installer you might not have it back far enough

Yeah Mine is all the way up to the tab in fact one of mine that was done with a factory cover I had to grind the timing tab back a bit

    Internal or external balance?
Mine is internal...been on there 15yrs and 700+ passes....I hope it's all the way on. I was too tight at first and did have to hone it to get it to go on.
It really can't go on further because flange would hit seal.
My cover is TA...maybe the difference?

Mine is internal, I know it fits really tight it was honed to ATI’s recommended specs. .0007 to .0009

the ati on my 350 sits away from timing mark. but they said they modify fords to fit buick 350. only issue for me is strain
on c/shaft because of a blower. but nothing yet.
