I seek some input from the club. I am going to look at a 72 Sun Coupe tomorrow, cash in hand. Seller claims 100% original and in very good (85%) shape. Claims only issue is leaky top, which is common. Couple body dings and small dents, but original paint, interior, etc. With that claim, he also claims all original interior not screwed up even with the leaky top???? Claims that it has been garaged for many many years (old man car) Is there anything in partriclar to SUN COUPES to be on the look out for? I have owned several BUICK's but not a Sun Coupe, yet. Thanks
If you can take a test drive, check how much wind noise you have and make sure you're okay with that before you buy it. If the top isn't tight it can get loud inside.
I am pretty sure the top is worn out, but restorable, just based upon the conversation with the present owner. So, as long as the parts are availbale to restore the top, the rest is just a Skylark, right?
Guys, is this worth 3 grand? The car is original and solid. The doors have dents from someone kicking them, looks never to been hit., All parts are there for the top, interior is original, worn in the usual spots, but complete, needs new carpet, seat cover in front, top, headliner and door panels. Floor pans not rusty. Engine purrs like a kitten, is strong. 3 grand? Help me decide.
If the rear quarters are clean and the interior is clean (didn't see any pictures) it would probably be worth it. Are you prepared to spend the money to paint it? But clearly you need to speak to the Sun Coupe God, otherwise known here as - "Staged70"
I would only buy it to hold on to for the indefinite future..other irons in the fire so no money to put into it for a long time..and I agree, the SUN COUPE MAN is the knowledgable one here.
Sorry I didn't read your entire post. Seems like you will need almost a whole new interior. That's going to cost a lot and take a lot of your time. Dito on the paint. Typically the car will not be worth what you put into it by the time you are done so the general rule of thumb is to buy a car in the best condition that you can afford. It's cheaper to let someone else do the work. So if this is exactly the car you want and you plan to keep it and it is the best you can afford then go for it and just get the best price you can. Start at $2000 or $2500.
I'd say $1500-$2000 at best. It needs just about everything. Also looks like the driver's quarter has been painted, and the underside of the hood has been painted, which raises questions about those areas. It's also got a Skylark Custom grille which it shouldn't have. With the roof nearly gone, it's probably got some hidden rust in the pillars. Take the vents off inside the doors and look inside the quarters with a flash light. If it's solid inside and underneath, you're probably ok for $1500-$2000. Just my $.02.
I offered 2 but he wants 3. I agree with the value, and as far as 1/4's they are in pretty good shape. We will see.
I saw one for sale last night in the back of the latest, "Buick Bugle". It looked like a nice one. I don't remember how much it was but it looked worth looking into. Ha, Ha, Chris... I found this one before you!:bla: E-roc
There's also this one on Ebay................for $13500.  http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=290103563685&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=019 It looks to be identical to mine, but I paid WAY less than what he's asking. I tried to get him to post some larger pictures, but he said they'd be grainy if he did, which he didn't.
Could you send me a PM with the VIN and build date from the cowl tag for my SunCoupe registry. I started collecting data in the early 90's and have about 30 cars logged in. I provide a 25+ page package of information when a car is registered. I'll send it to you if you purchase the car. Thanks
Steve, Not to highjack the thread, but many years ago when I was having the rear built for my 71 GS455, I needed to pick up some of the rear u-joint bolts and was sent to All American Classics Wrecking near Vancouver, WA. I pulled then off of a suncoupe. I can't remember the damage, but it was one that they were parting. It may (or may not) still be there. I don't know their turnover, but they're website is at http://www.allamericanclassics.com/ You may contact them and heard that they had one years ago and check and see if they still do. This was about 6 years ago.
Steve, I was there while visiting my brother in Battleground over Christmas, if there was a suncoupe, it did not register with me, and I checked out the entire inventory...likely gone. Anyeay, I offer the guy and we will see. He wnated 5K do you recall what the craigslist ad was aksing? I recall around 2000, and when I asked him his bottom line, he popped off 5 and I laughed...
I think it may have been either 2 or 3, which looked in the ballpark for the car. It couldn't have been 5K. The only thing justifying 2-3K is the fact that it's a suncoupe. If it were a skylark, it would be half that at best. I think the suncoupe at AA was orange when I was there. The vehicle list on the site lists a factory sunroof car but says that it's gold. Their vehicle list doesn't really look like it may be that current though. But, if they have had a gold one and the one I remember was orange, then they've had two in the last 6 years!
If that is the one out of CA for $13,500, I think that thing has been for sale forever. Was on cctol.com, now in the Bugle. He is only asking $12,500 at cctol. http://adcache.collectorcartraderonline.com/10/6/6/86941666.htm:rant: :spank:
