Lake Speed suggests we don’t need extra zinc if we run SP oil

Interesting video from Lake Speed suggesting that newer API SP oil has a combo of wear additives plus zinc that replace traditional high zinc oil for flat tappet cams. Apparently they have reduced the calcium that was being used as a detergent in API SN. The calcium was fighting the zinc. Newer SP has a package of wear additives and less calcium.

Huh.. looks like he lost his contract/employment from/with Joe Gibbs racing. First time I have ever seen him on camera in a shirt that does not have the name/logo of his former(?) employer on it.

Good to know that the modern SP/SQ oils have reduced the camshaft destroying detergent packages that the oils of the first two decades of this century had in them.

I still will use and recommend Joe Gibbs Driven oils, have had tremendous success with them over the last 20 years or so, and cost should not be a factor when considering what oil to put in your expensive high performance engine.

And I suspect that there will not be much cost savings.. looks like Mobile 1 classic 10-30 is retailing for $12/QT, or $2/QT more than the Driven HR-2 oil which is perfectly fine for 90% of you out there that don't need the benefits of a full synthetic.

So much ado about nothing really, but options are nice to have.

    wow, Jim,
I love you buddy, like a man, like a Budweiser hug but I got to say I am definitely a Lake Speed junior fan and I thought you were rather rude for your comment. I can honestly say I can search the Internet upside down right side up and sideways and I could find nothing that correlated with what you said. In fact, there is basically nothing why Lake Speed Jr “quit.” The closest I could find is a skirmish between them, Joe Gibbs and Lake Speed Junior after he formulated their oils. Joe Gibbs signed a contract to sell the oils off. Personally, that probably pissed Junior off! I watch his show a lot, and it’s amazing what I learn. Still love you buddy! Sorry I didn’t see you at the nationals!
PS, for all the Internet research I did, I found out the dirty side. A whole bunch of drivers quit Joe Gibbs about the same time and so did a whole bunch of pit crew people. Seems like Joe Gibbs was going through some funk.

Rude? Really?... that was not my intent, it was just an observation. I always appreciate his dedication to oils, and personally like the guy.. met him a few times.

Just how deep are we in the Brewskis there tonight Johnny?:p

@Jim Weise you might want to take 2nd look at his videos, I don’t see any Joe Gibbs shirts in anything recent, but maybe I’m missing something. I see some sealed power shirts and a few others, no Joe Gibbs.

Ya, I am sure your correct... I don't subscribe to his channel or watch his videos with any regularity.. but for years, in the ones I did see, he always had those Driven shirts on.. I usually see the vids from PRI/SEMA or some other special event.

I wasn't "deep" into any brewskis. I believe you are a great engine builder. I believe Lake is a great petroleum engineer. I probably mistook what you said about him as a crack. I watch his videos ALL the time. I believe he goes through testing as scientifically as possible. NASCAR... I watch it all the time too. Never did have a liking for Joe Gibbs. Maybe that's why I took sides. No offense meant to you.
