    Hello
I have a 70 skylark. 350 buick 4 barrel. With original quadrajet. Been daily driving fine. Then this past weekend I removed carb and tried to replace. Ended up putting back on. Now my xar is knocking. From outside it sounds like my flywheel is rubbing and squealing. If I rev it sounds like a knock. . I dknt know where to start. Still runs good with same power. Help. Please. Thank you

Max Damage I'm working on it!

Did you take anything else apart? Did you drop anything ? Into the intake or onto the front accessories?

There is no reason that an engine would "knock" after pulling and reinstalling a carb. An engine "knock" is usually a serious mechanical issue... Can you tell where the noise is coming from? Sometimes listening through a section of hose (one side near your ear the other moving around to find the noise) can be helpful.

Hopefully one of the smart people here has better ideas than I.

A knock AND a squeak is not good!
Stop driving it until you investigate.
    Check your flexplate for cracks.
If that checks out drop your oil pan, and check your rod bearings
Rod bearings typically wont knock at idle, but as you raise the rpm they'll start making noise, and especially as the rpm comes down, thats because the load on the upper rod bearing has decreased and the rod is allowed to dance on the rod journal.
A spun rod bearing will squeak, this comes from the bearing spinning dry on the rod journal grinding it down, that happened to me a few years ago in my 350 which prompted my current build.
Your carb R&I has nothing to do with your knocking/squeaking, it is purely coincidental:cool:

Dang. Ok. I raised car. Running it and it sounds like a squel coming from flywheel. My trans pan is leaking like a sivcould my low trans oil make sounds. I feel like its my flywheel or torque converter.

Take a good look at the flexplate, it may be cracked. 350 cracked flexplates, especially early OEM ones are common. They will make knocking clicking noises that come and go. Check the flexplate/converter bolts as well.

I've reinstalled carbs after work and sometimes not resealed correctly or hooked vacuum lines correctly. It takes just a minor leak of air to add to fuel/air mix and change timing , etc. If it were me , I would R/R the carb again and recheck gaskets and air lines to ensure your back to the original starting point?! My guess is you will find the fix, just take your time and look over every connection and fastener. Otherwise as stated, the knock is a coincidence.

Thank you. This is what I was hoping to hear. My car sits low. Soft stock suspension. Jacking it up in garage and on jack stands. Good ones "snap on" still feels sketchy. This car so big and heavy im always scared to crawl under a car that sits a few inches of ground. Anyways. Im at a cross road. With rhis car
I love it done so much to it. But we have a baby and my time is super limited. Writing this on work parking lot about to start work. Xar at home. Think im gonna get rid of her.

Drop the inspection cover and check the flywheel bolts and the convertor bolts first . Check for cracks . They might be hard to see . Its what Larry suggested

Today I put caps back on carb.i had tried putting vacuum lines on them. One to dist. One to this heater core looking thing. Back the way it was before. Amd when I started it. It sounds normal
. And I checked timing. Its a 10 degrees at idle? Is that correct? Thanks. I turned it off because I was hungry and didn't want to get my hopes up... now I want to take it off the stands and try again
.. ill let you guys know.

Starts and sounds good. When I pull out by the end of driveway is slight knock then on way back in its is a sound like a dryer rubbing the metal to metal. But way slower than the engine is turning
Super dry metal to metal sound
    I'm gonna sell it

    Damn.

When you say you hear a metal to metal sound when you pull out the end of the driveway , Are the wheels turned completely in one direction ?? What you seem to be describing is the wheel stops touching on the lower control arm . And the knock too sounds like a Suspension noise or mount noise . At first you seemed to say it was constant . Now it appears you are saying it only happens and then stops ?????

Your last line you wrote will sure cure the noise's . You will never hear them again .

I am going to try and upload a vid. Im already assuming the worst. Prob my bearings? I'm stumped. It fires right up and runs as it did before. Really good. Aside from the sound.
