My son and I started a slow long term restoration on a running 69 Electra(all original). The battery was dead so we replaced it. Then the new battery wont stay charged so took alternator off to have it checked. Everything checked ok but after reinstalling it had engine trouble. Assume we had a short or relay problem so we jumped the battery. Loud noise came out off engine so we quickly turned off and white smoke came out carb. Ok to try again? Possible problem?

About your problem with the Electra:
Maybe the starter solenoid was shorted, causing the starter to run with the engine.

Anyway, loud noise and white smoke is never a good thing....:(
(except when you like to do burn-outs....)

First try to turn the engine over by hand, this will be much easier if you remove the spark plugs.
If it turns over without any trouble, use the starter (plugs still removed) to turn the engine over.

We removed the plugs and it turned over fine. Replaced them while we had them out and it started fine. I appreciate the help.
The original problem is still at hand. Battery is being drained. Trying to check draws. Wish me luck.

Set up your meter between the cable and battery post to see what your draw is. Pull the fuses out one at a time until the draw stops. Once you know the system at fault start tracing it down. Dont be suprised if its something simple like a glove box or trunk light.

Have the external voltage regulator tested. It's the small black box attached to the inner fenderwell at the 3 o'clock position in this photo:

Is this something I would test/Autozone/mechanic? Also How do I test the system drain? DCV,DCA, or Ohm? I tried and can't get a reading.

    Thanks so much.

PS How do you get in the truck if the lock and assembly is out? Frame wall with small holes behind back seat.....

The parts store should be able to test it for you.

Together with the report of a strange noise that came from the engine the other day, I would suspect the starter motor and the electrical connections :Smarty:
