Jeremy's 455 motor build thread

    Yea my dad says the converter screams. We put a 10" tci street fighter 242101 in.

    Apparently, the Buick torque is too much for it.:D Call JW.

    That's a possibility. Just gonna wait until I get my tires. They will be .99" larger in diameter than what I have now.

    That will make things worse. It will decrease numerically the final drive. That will cause even more shear in the converter.

    Hmm. It wouldn't lower the rpm at all? Well I'll start saving money for w.e I gotta get to have a good fun safe run.

    No, it's sort of like a 10 speed bike. If you start off in 10th gear from a dead stop, it requires more power to accelerate the bicycle. The engine sees a bigger load with numerically lower gearing. The converter slips more in that case. A heavier car does the same thing. It stresses the converter more causing it to stall higher.

    Well the new tire diameter will be 28.00. From 27.01. 28 seems to be normal for street.

    Hey Larry, so I'm not shifting on my own, my transmission seems to shift at 4500 or so. Maybe thats why it hits the limiter at 5500 before the lights?

    No, the converter is too loose for your application. Buying an off the shelf converter is a gamble. It might be OK, or it might not. You can lighten the governor weights to make it shift higher. If the kick down is not hooked up, that will make it short shift.

    I've got a set of 28x10.50 Et Streets, these are 9 in wide bias ply's mounted on Buick rally's, Your welcome to use them till your tires come in, You'd just need to get down here to pick them up.

    I'd bet your car will be in the 11's with a good convertor, suspension and some tuning.

    Swap the trans fluid for John deere 303 hydro oil,..that will tighten it up

    Converters aren’t a magic potion, no need for a custom unit in 95% of combos.

    I could see where you would think that Sean, being a 350 guy..

    The reality is that when we are talking about the 455 based motors, the inverse it true, buying generic shelf converters for any 455 Buick, especially modified ones, rarely results in satisfaction. Jeremy's experience here is hardly unique.

    The reason is simple really.. A converter is a reactionary device. The more power you put into it, and the heavier the car, the higher a given converter combo of parts will stall, and greater the chance your going to 'drive thru it' on the dragstrip.

    The target for most of these shelf converters is a 3500lbs car, with approx 350-375 ft lbs of torque at 3000 rpm. Modified SBC/LS torque numbers. Generic converters are designed to work reasonably well in the highest number of potential applications.

    Even modified Buick 350's make SBC torque numbers, which is the target for these generic shelf converters. If you took one of these converters, and put it behind one of your NA 350 buick builds, it would work reasonably well.

    Big block Buicks on the other hand, even in near stock form, make exceptional low to mid range torque with easily 125-200 ft lbs over that "target" for the generic converters.

    And from that, comes Jeremy's experience..

    Swap the fluid, run the new tires, shift manually and start saving for a new convertor.

    If we know an engine makes way more torque then we can buy accordingly knowing it will stall higher than a SBC.
