Nobody had to hold a gun to the shoppers heads, obviously if it takes mom and pop both having to work to support a family, they are going to go for the cheaper Chinese good. That and the fact it's hard to tell Chinese from American goods due to the labeling, most people won't take the time to check labels to see where stuff is made!

My observation has not been people buying things they couldn’t afford previously but rather buying more stuff than they need. They’re not better off, they just have more stuff. Patrick
The launch was much more than an ego trip for Bezos, with the successful flight he has now qualified to bid on multi million dollar NASA contracts to shuttle astronauts to the space station. They have a new rocket in development that has the power to get them there & back.
Calm down boys.. We live in a society and a marketplace that is constantly evolving.. None of you have been down to the local blacksmith shop lately I assume... Or had your weekly Milk delivery.. I am quite sure that there was an uproar when those mom and pop shops were replaced by the first hardware store and supermarket. As Americans, we have options.. in the instance above, we can sit and whine about bygone days, or we can take our blacksmith shop, turn it into an auto service garage, expand into a chain of them, and become a wealthy successful businessman. The milkman opened up a Yoga Gym and spends his mornings on the beach now.. I don't hate Amazon, Walmart or any other retailer.. they are responding to market forces and customer choice. More power to 'em.. I don't have any problem with Bezos.. again, here's a quarter... call someone who cares.. I think Frank is actually onto something, this is just another business venture.. and exactly why they used a ground launched rocket, vs an aircraft launched vehicle, like Branson did. It smacks of ego trip when Bezos start comparing himself to the Wright Brothers.. That though would only even occur to an egomaniac who is starting to believe his own PR.. Ya.... ok buddy... JW

Dunkin Donuts and Wal-Mart each started with a single store. Through good management each became huge. Both have put many mom and pop operations out of business, yet we still patronize them. Bezos has done the same thing and for some reason many of us single him out as a bad guy. He is guilty only of doing what thousands of others dreamed about doing. Edit - As to the Sears catalog - Sears already sold products made by other manufacturers; it is not a quantum leap to think that some bright soul at SR might figure out that they could sell many of those products directly from the manufacturer and just take a piece of the action.
Yup Pat, assuming there will be someone here to run it, I will be long dead by then. Too much money on the table with gasoline taxes for the Gov to bend to the whako environmentalists for this to happen anytime soon. It will take generations for the gov to replace that income source, before they outlaw it.. Or I will have started my second career as a professional bracket racer.. Or I will be running a hot rod electric car shop.. the loss of the IC engine doe not mean we will lose auto racing.. it will just be different. Have you seen the low 8 second Mustang, that was run recently at an NHRA event by Bob Tasca? I would not sit here and whine about it.. I would do something.. Choices my friends, we all have them, because we live here. Be thankful for that, I know I am every day. Even the day that the 200-4R that I just built and installed behind one of my alum head BBB's in a 71 Centurion decides to break the forward/direct clutch input shaft on the final test drive.. after I had spend days getting it to shift "just right".. turns out the shaft was a factory defect.. snapped the splined end right off, and you could see the inclusion in the cast steel. Yeah There was one where I live. Supposedly shipped in by rail. Do you remember that Sears sold cars also. I would say they were ahead of their time and the Products were good. Still have the same AC unit from 20 years ago. They just didn't adapt to suit current times. I.E. their stores were half full of women clothes that looked like they were purchased buy fashion buyers from the eighties . Heard they sold more appliances than anyone else. Still have a Kenmore fridge plugging away.
My Kenmore microwave from Sears still works perfectly after over 20 years use!! Nobody mentioned the incredible risks undertaken by Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson. One minor flight problem would've vaporized them. I wonder what the reactions would be had that occurred? Good for them in taking such incredible chances to get where they are today. In Canada, we had the arrogant T. Eaton Company who believed they'd survive forever. I worked for them in the early seventies. Long gone now, and very little remains of that empire. Only a few, now repurposed, buildings. The Winnipeg downtown store was torn down and our NHL Hockey arena now occupies that site. I hear it's a beautiful place. People have an inherent desire to seek out the best deals and prices with no regard to quality. You see this all the time. Products which once lasted decades are difficult to find. Far too easy to buy new every few years.
Even the 90’s, they had from vw beetle exhaust to chevelle suspension. I used to read those magazines when I was done cleaning my uncles $60 SKS. I wouldn’t change a thing.
I also have a few older Craftsman power tools, although none of your vintage. Most of my hand tools are Craftsman. Great quality for the home mechanic.
