My interior sheet shows the Y41.

That wouldl do the job as the dash emblem is part of the package.

    Gregg,
It looks like you may have the correct one for your car.

Actually, it shows M20 for a 4-speed (I think), and my car's an auto.

    Gregg,
Yeah I see it now. It also has the "D57" code for a 4-speed consolette. It looks like your seat was supposed to go into another GSX. I guess it was a good thing they made all those "yellow" cars in batches.

That's ok, years ago when we were doing a quicky resto on a 70 White GS 350 Coupe, we found a GSX seat tag rolled up inside the Body Shop Inspection sheet that we pulled out of the dash. The seat tag was for a GSX that was a few cars away. We always figured it was a White GSX that was included with the batch of white cars.

    Duane,

Did the 71 and 72 GSX's have Y41 written on the little interior sheet also? If so, could this help in documenting a 71 car without the build sheet?

    Great thread. :TU:

    James,
From what I understand (after talking to various Fisher Body employees) the "Y41" option on these sheets was only used to help ID the shells for the Buick techs on the final assembly lines. You need to remember that at this time there would have only been a body colored shell with a rear spoiler installed. (There were no stripes or decals on the shells at this time.)

Fisher Body installed the rear spoilers on the 70-72 shells so when they wrote up these sheets for the 70 cars they wrote "Y41" because they knew all vehicles with this option were GSXs.

For the 1971-72 cars this was not the case, because a regular GS could have been an SCO car with a rear spoiler. They had no way to know if the car was or was not a GSX, therefore I figure they did not write the "Y41" code on these sheets. I have these sheets from quite a few 71 GSX's and none of them have the GSX code. Now they could all have the wrong sheets/seats installed in the cars, so the verdict is still out on this one.

We have the seat sheet from Rich's 71 350 GSX, so when he starts the resto and pulls off the driver side front fender, we will see if the number on the saddle bag matches the one on the sheet. This should give us the answer to your question.

71-72 would just be Wa5 not Y41 correct ? Not sure i'll have my fender off any time soon. So I cannot confirm my seat tag is the correct one either. Although all the other options/colors seem to match up.

PS Duane, I have not got an answer to the original wheels on my car yet.

    DL,
I have never seen a 71-72 seat sheet with "WA5" on it either, so we probably will have to wait for Ritchie.

I took care of the wheel code on your Build sheet. I listed exactly what the code could be, which is either the "Super Sport wheels, or 14x6/15x7 Chrome wheels". It will be up to you to determine which is correct, but we may be able to figure the wheel size by looking at the rear axle ratio and speedo gear in the trans, and checking the assembly manual.

Your 71 sheet had info on it that I had never seen before. It listed the Calif emissions code, which would have been a seperate sticker affixed to the rear driver side quarter window. I knew the codes existed, but it was the first I had seen on a sheet. It will go out within a few days.

Oh by the way... I was going to ask about the Cali emissions. I understood the car was from Vista,CA. Where can i learn about what all equipment should be on the car for the Cali emissions ?

    DL,
The 71 California emissions info should be in the 71 assembly manual, but the ones for sale are not complete. I will look in one of mine and see what info I can find.

Also if you could make a photocopy of your seat tag and send it to me I would appreciate it. I would like a copy for my records. Thanks.

On the subject of these "seat tags" did Fisher body run these cars down the line pretty much in sequence, As in 100 followed by 101, 102, 103 etc.?

The number I'm referring to is of course the hand written number that appears at the top of every tag.

    Glen,
I don't know if Fisher numbered the shells in sequence or not, but it sure would have made sense if they did. All I know for sure is that the seat tags were supposed to match the cowl saddle bag number, as were the numbers crayoned on the rim/tire assemblies.

Then, once the bodies arrived at "Buick" Final Assembly (they were shipped by truck across town) they were put in sequence ( low optioned cars were mixed in with higher optioned cars, so production was not slowed down) and the parts were "keyed" to get to their destinations at the right time.
