Not everyone agrees with that, but whatever works for you. Some of us need more and "cleaner" airflow than what that filter and housing can provide.

I've been running that Wix 3 1/2" filter and Allstar drop base that you have. It just fits with my SP1 and QJ. I had to ditch the 1/4" thick QJ base gasket as it rubbed with that, but well worth it.

I can't even fit the corresponding Allstar lid with a thin carb mount gasket, no spacer, 3-1/2 filter and SP-1 or SP-X intake with a GS flat hood. The Q950 is the same height as a Qjet, I think. No worries w/ the Allstar base and throttle linkage interference w/ a Qjet or 4150 that some Frankenstein-looking bases seem to have either.

Here’s the recommendation to why I chose this carb.

You want at least 1.5” between the bottom of the lid and the top of the carb,or air horn. In your situation, you don’t have the upper air horn for the choke,so it’s the top of the carb or gasket surface. When you get the lid down closer, you start to restrict and change airflow into the carb. I have seen filter tops work with success and in some other situations, made no change.

So your saying the guy who's building the cool fiberglass hoods on this forum needs to speed up! lol

Intan my sp1 with holley and at the track I removed the air cleaner.....it ran better and more consistent open, on the road I didn't care for every hp so the drop down smaller element that cleared the hood was ok.

In fact some dryer vent tube just pointed towards the carb was worth a tenth

I believe if the Poston intake was in the same league as the TA intakes you would
see more of them on our Buicks. As Bob said earlier the "S" divider was debunked decades ago.

I have one of Craigs hoods. I would like to mold and connect the scoops to the air box and make them functional. Combine that with a pan to seal it and there’s as much as 3 tenths there. Been there done that.
The TA intakes are a better design,BUT you already own the Poston intake AND you are just looking for consistency with a bracket car. Sure, you want to try and squeeze all the performance out of that engine as possible. You some pieces and parts to experiment with.

What carb do you run w/ that Corvette drop-base air cleaner? I bought what I assumed was a Chinese knock-off but couldn't get the Q-Jet to fit. Can't remember what the prob was but I think the accelerator pump hit the thing. TIA.

I run a quadrajet with that drop base air cleaner. It fits fine. I believe this is a GM one. I bought it used off a guy locally.

Thanks! I think THAT is the difference--a GM one versus a cheap Chinese knock-off. Thanks, again.
