Is that the better way to go? I thought I read somewhere that preventing the excess fuel from returning to the tank can cause the fuel to overheat, since it's stuck there next to a hot engine, waiting for the carb to need it. Letting it return to the tank lets the fuel pump get cooler fuel, which can, uh, prevent vapor lock(?) I forget the exact claimed advantages, but what's your opinion on this theory?

Yes, the vapor return helps prevent vapor lock by returning hot fuel and vapor to the tank.

Blocking the return allows the pump to make a little more pressure. When I was running the Stage1 pump, I used a ball valve I bought at Home Depot, and installed it inline in the rubber section of the return line. That way, I could open and close it when I wanted to.

I think compression test and leak down. Maybe a bore scope to check things out in the cylinders and intake.

Is it backfiring/ puffing smoke out the carb when it's breaking up? Will it do it on a rev or only when it's loaded?

Very similar build. Carb was fine. Much better than his Holley, actually.

I'm going to install the pump and sender soon. I'm off for 2 weeks in a couple weeks, so I'll have plenty of time to tinker and hopefully rectify this annoying issue.

There's something wrong with the mechanical pump if it isn't keeping up.

Look at this old road test...no electric pump and they're winding the crap out of it.

I had the exact problem. Was running a GM HEI off of a ‘76 Park Ave. Also was running R44TSX gapped at 0.060. Switched to R43TS gapped at 0.040. Problem gone

just put in a TA ready to run distributor to replace the HEI that finally wore out. Cant wait to see how it runs

    I have that magazine! Haha

That became the Jones/Benisek car and was switched to an automatic for racing.

They are winding it up. However, that's a stock Stage 1 and mine is a bit different, to say the least.

My TA Stage 1 pump is 2 years old, too. The previous one I had lasted a year and left me on the side of the road.

I know of several engines with the 413 cam or similar that had a Stage1 pump, and had fuel starvation issues. Mine was one of them. I had even "upgraded" to the TA 500 hp pump, and had the same problem. Installed a red pusher pump at the tank and it was golden from there.

Maybe they should add fuel delivery as a necessary evil for the 413 cam. :D

I'll post here after I install the pump and sending unit.

I also ordered valve springs from TA this morning. So, they'll be on standby as well. If I need them, I have them. If not, they don't eat anything.

That seems like a really good idea.

I added the very same ball valve setup to my ‘71. An added bonus is that you can adjust the valve to eliminate the jitter of the gauge needle at idle and full throttle,
