Need help identifying rear I have. Stamped letters are LK. B. 284.1. It has bop cover, c clip axles, 8.5 ears at 5 and 7 o’clock. I measured ring gear and it’s 8.5. The retainer bolt that holds in c-clip is 5/8” (going from memory) but is definitely the 8.5 size. I believe rear is out of A body. It is 55 1/2” backing plate to backing plate. It has A on third member but does not have bolt in axles. 2.56 gear-open. Local “experts” tell me it’s a 8.2 but not by what I have read. If anyone can identify it I sure would appreciate the info. Thank you

. Thank you. Will 8.5 parts from GM 8.5 interchange with my axle? I have read that automobile 8.5 I internal parts are interchangeable. Then I read that BOP axles require BOP parts only? Confusing. I would like to go to pick and pull and get an axle with posi and higher gear. I know I have to change the carrier along with gears and posi.

There is something strange going in here for sure..........it has all the markers of a buick 8.5. But never seen one with c clip axles?. That cover is also not the normal 8.5 cover??? And the bearing caps don't look like normal 8.5 caps........
I would pull the carrier and find out what size bearing are actually in there b4 I go buy any parts. If it all lines up with 8.5 then it should swap. Just not sure why you have c clip axles......I think the later corporate housing like in the g body's that got the 8.5 had c clip but the build dates would be way off and not sure they even bolt in. I know the spring perches are in a different location for sure

Looking at the ends of the axle tubes, that is the typical bolt-in style axle that all of the rearend have. Do you have a picture of the outside of the backing plates, where the axle goes into the tube?

If you have c clips you can remove that small 5/16 bolt thats loose, remove the spider pin. Push the axles in and see them. The end of the axles has a notch in them for the clips to slide in.

But that sure looks like a retainer plate above the brake backing plate to me.

Remove those 4 nuts and pull the axle out if bolt in.....alsi bolt in axles have an access hole in the axle flange

That’s a bolt-in axle end. Just like every other 71-72 Skylark/GS 8.5”. Remove those four nuts and the axle shafts will come out. They might be a little stuck, but they will come out.

This is the end of a c-clip style tube, with the bearing & seal in place.
Notice the tube itself tapers down, and the section where the bearing/seal are located is actually on the outer side of the backing plate.
The backing plate will bolt directly to the flange with no retainer or anything because it’s not holding the axle or bearing in.
