I’m in a pickle with a distributor cap

I took the Number one plug out and had my buddy bump the starter until my finger blew out and then turned over by hand to TDC .
The rotor was pointing at the first cylinder and when I put the cap on it was in correlation with the first plug .firing order is correct. I used 18436572 clockwise. it fired right up. Any adjustments in any direction would cause it to stall or shake. especially if I am rev it. That picture Of where the timing mark is is about the only place that it doesn’t shake.

Where was the timing mark setting when you did all the above before starting?

Maybe like on the 9 o’clock position. after my finger blew out of the hole. Then we took a breaker bar and turned it over to TDC 0.

Your dumb friend might have put the chain on wrong.

Well dam. I really didnt want to invest to much into this motor. Mainly because itll never be the power house i want it to be. Just an idea. But couldn’t i stick a screwdriver in the plug hole and hand turn it over till the screwdriver stops rising and mark the new tdc?

That shows you when the piston is at TDC, but if the chain is on wrong, the valves will not be in sync, and no, that is not helpful.

Easiest way I can think of to check the timing chain is set the motor back on TDC, pull the distributor, and put one of those micro camera thingies down the hole to see if the dots are lined up on the timing chain gears. It's an excuse to buy a new tool, too!
