I just Joined today and this group is a great find for me! I have 71 455 out of a Riviera rated 330 horse. The bottom end is all Std. Std and is in great shape and I am Basically doing a Re-ring on her and upgrading the cam and valvetrain for street strip use but not going crazy with it. I am curious with the lower compression how much Nitrous Oxide the stock bottom end (factory pistons) may handle? Also I have a Jet stage 3 Q-jet and wondering if anyone has any experience running these Carburetors? Thanks Kevin
I wouldn't put any nitrous to "stock"original cast pistons.... A set of basically any forged pistons can take 100-200 "shot".. I've run forged Seal Powers, like 10.5:1 compression, 200 shot of nitrous, ran this combo for over 4 years, Also ran WEISCO's they can take like 300 and were affordable.... The first 100 shot is the best! If ya can't buy the pistons, and are dead set, i'd try the 100, but know its not going to live long........ Gary G.
100 is safe, but it is CRUCIAL your tune is right and all components are functioning properly and in concert. Pull 2 degrees of timing out and go 1 step colder on your plugs for a little added insurance. Make sure your fuel system (feeding both the carb and the fuel solenoid on the nitrous system) is up to the task. Make sure you use a WOT switch and I'd personally recommend a window switch to control the on/off rpm. Nitrous isnt this big scary death sentence for an engine as long as it's used within reason and proper tuning adjustments are applied. Granted, any I unknown fatigue on components can become more problematic on the giggle juice, so using old used components can be a little more adventurous, but that's the risk you take applying any big performance upgrade to used stock components. Just be careful, "dope" can be addictive!!
X2 on the fuel system. Nitrous liberates extra oxygen in the combustion chamber. Unless you have enough fuel, your engine will go lean, and become a boat anchor in very short order.
