How do I mount a rear axle on my -72 Skylark GS?

    Hi all.

Man, do I feel like a doofus for asking this question, but since I removed the axle roughly 5 years ago - and for the life of me can't find the pictures I took when removing it - I can sort of justify why I don't know how to mount it.

I don't need details, pictures from an existing installation will do fine, as I have a general idea. Looking for pictures and videos online gave me nothing though, and searching here returned roughly 200 results.

Adding to the confusion is the fact that the guy who restored the axle for me kept some of the smaller parts (mostly bolts I'm suspecting). It's been three years since he did this though so I've written them off as gone for ever.

    Thanks in advance!

Nevermind, it turns out that some parts fit a little bit better when put in the correct place.:oops:

By axle, you mean the entire assembly right? If so, make sure you tighten the trailing arm bolts with the weight of the car on it. In other words, at ride height. If you tighten the bolts with the axle hanging with no weight on it, your pre-load the bushings- no bueno

Jason, what is the effect of the done-wrong preloaded bushings? premature wear? squeaks? wheel hop?

I know you're correct about the procedure but have never known the effect of doing it wrong.

Im pretty sure the sleeves in the bushings are bonded to the rubber. So if you tighten them up with the suspension extended, the rubber in the bushing will twist and will eventually tear apart. Plus is screws up the ride height because the suspension wont be relaxed.

    Yeah the entire assembly.

Thanks, I did tighten them with the car off the ground but will undo that and tighten them when everything is in place.
