Hood clearance?

I've got the new to me 455 Regal sitting here. When I got it, it didn't have an air filter. A standard air filter, even the 3 incher won't allow the stock hood to close. Anyone know if or try to see if a hood from a t-type or GN would allow enough clearance for a decent air filter? Btw, my Regal is an '85.

i dont know that the type hood would do you any good. i would have to say, you would have to either use a stock style air cleaner which sits down over the carb more(if its a qjet) or get a dropped base open element filter if its a holley, demon etc. i have a cowl hood on mine with an sp1 intake, nitrous plate and a 3" element and it still clears, so i can guarentee you a 2 inch cowl with help.

I'm using the SP1 intake and a turbo hood. I had to make my own air cleaner.I designed it after the star wars air cleaner. Still I had to cut some of the hood bracing to get the hood closed.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but Brad, I'm going to have to come up sometime next summer and check out this Regal. Sounds wicked. :TU:

For those of you using your stock hood, what exact air cleaner element are you using? Ftiw my 455 has a B4B intake and Holley DP carb.

    Good Afternoon.

What type "chassis mounts" are on the Regal/455?
If they are not from "Poston Buick" or "TA Performance," this could be the Hood Clearance issue.

    Hope This Was Helpful.

Couldn't tell ya. The swap was done by the previous owner. I prefer using the stock hood but there isn't much clearance there. I'm unsure of how much extra room the t-type or GN hoods give you but I'd prefer to use something like those if my stocker won't work. I can't be the only one with this issue, what are you guys using?

Hey i had a nice eddie triangle air cleaner my parents bought me for xmass a few years ago. DIDN'T work. it got crushed in first time i closed the hood.... now i'm using and eddie drop base *don't know what one* that my boss gave me, kinda had to fenagle it a little to get it in place correctly. but now the hood closes now:) it's a little misshapen from the initial closing. but whatever, i'm gonna get a cowl eventually :)

I had to cut some of the bracing of a turbo hood to make mine work. I think I had a 2 inch element and T/A mounts. I now have a cowl hood and a whole different engine, so I cant get any more pics for you. Shawn

Running an LS6 454 in my BB Regal. Had to use a drop base 14" a/c with a 2" aftermarket element. Very tight, but it did work. Can e-mail pic's, can't figure out how to post them here.
