John is correct that the headers limit how well your system can be tucked in. If you look on my system the X is the highest part of the system. I went from a 2 1/2 inch with no crossover to the X system and gained clearance. I found that in order to get this quality I had to build the system myself. Unless you have a shop that is very good at building custom systems the results will not equal what you can do yourself. Also for the cost most places want for putting in a good system you can buy a nice little MIG welder. The system I built was my first major welding job and it was much better than the job I paid $200 for.

My current set is 3" from the header to a Dynomax "Tru-X" to 3" Super 40's. The best I can tell this set was good for .05 improvement over the old set-up. That was 3" from the headers to a "homemade" X-pipe to 3 chamber 40-series flowmasters. I can't say if the improvement was do to the mufflers or the X pipe. I do know the Super 40's have a deeper tone, less hollow sound, and less "rap" than the standard 40 series mufflers.

    Compared to headers

    Thx

If you don't want to spend a ton on mufflers and complete custom exhaust system as has been described in your thread, here is an inexpensive yet powerful solution. All of which are very nice setups, I might add.

I have the dynamax standard high flow 2 1/2" in and out with regular 2 1/2" tail pipes out the back like the GN system. Performance? In time trials with mufflers is 11:80, through the headers 11:66 these flow so well through the stock exhaust pipes I only gained .15 hundreds w/open headers.

If your budget is small, this system will work well and you don't have clearance problems to solve as with a custom system.

Sorry for hijacking the thread a little but what flow number is considered good for a semi-loud muffler? Ive just bought 2.5" Pypes "StreetPro" mufflers that flow 349. Good thing about those is that they dont contain any filler.

I've already got a good exhaust system. I will be jumping about 125 hp over the winter though and I don't think the Blowmasters will flow like I want them to even though I have always loved the flowmaster sound. It's been so long since I've had a decent mill in a car that I wasn't sure how the technology had evolved.

What are everyone's thoughts on running 3" pipe and necking up to a 3.5" Flowmaster muffler to keep the sound and inmprove flow a bit?
