High Flow mufflers

My current exhaust setup is 2" primaries, 3.5" collectors to a 3" X-pipe into 50 Series Blowmasters dumped at the axle.

I want to take 3" pipes all the way out the back with my new engine that will have more power but I have been hearing that Flowmasters don't flow well at all.

What's a good muffler that keeps sound down but flows well?

    Thx.

I run a full length 3" system with an X-pipe. I recently switched from Spintech to Dynomax Ultraflo welded mufflers (square ones). It is quieter at idle than before, and it picked up about 0.04 in ET. This is on my GS in my sig below and avatar. I highly recommend the Ultraflo's.

    Have fun.

I'm thinking on the same lines as you and getting rid of the flow masters.

Has anyone run the round ultraflows? Do they flow & perform any better than the square case?

I got them from Jeg's. Part #289-17221 - $69.99 each. They're actually called Race Magnum Welded Muffler. I didn't want an all out race, round muffler because I live in a fairly quiet neighborhood, and I didn't see a need to make anyone mad at the noise. And, I picked-up some ET with them. Best of both worlds. I'm really happy with this set-up.

    Have fun.

Hooker MaximumFlows are identical in construction to the UltraFlows. Might be a few bucks cheaper.

    Straight thru muffler noise

Are any of the modern glass pack style mufflers quiet enough for regular street use like the Dynomax Race Magnum Bullet Mufflers or the Stainless Works Smooth Tube Mufflers in 3" straight through? Thanks

How would you describe the sound compared to a Flowmaster? I really like how my Flowmasters sound but I am sure they don't flow that well since they are three chamber mufflers.

I know what you're saying. I like the Flowmaster sound, too. The Dynomaxes don't quite have that "hollow trash can" sound like the Flow's. They have a little more "popping" or high frequency spikes, I guess at idle. Some of that is due to the 14:1 compression I have. I can't tell you what the WOT sounds like. I'm always in the car with a helmet on!

I currently have 2" primaries, 3.5" collectors 3" x-pipe, long case Magnaflow straight through mufflers (5"x8" case, offset inlet-center outlet,) and 3" tailpipes. I am very pleased with the mufflers. They are also poilished stainless steel so they look really nice also.

The car previously had 3" x-pipe, 3" 1-chamber Flowmasters (yes it was REALLY loud) and no tail pipes. It sounded cool for about the 1st 5 minutes of driving and then I was tired of it.

With the new mufflers (the Magnaflows) and tailpipes the car is much more street friendly and you can actually enjoy the drive. At the track the car has actually goes as fast (or faster) with the Magnaflows even with the additional weight of the tailpipes. It also does not have the drone sound (resonance) at any speed while driving. With the Flowmasters at 55 mph my wife would always tell me to speed up or slow down because the exhaust was painful.

The Magnaflows do not have the "Flowmasster sound" but do still sound great in my opinion. My wife says that the Magnaflows make the car sound more refined and smooth at WOT when compared to Flowmasters.

I would go with the Walker Dynomax Ultra Flows and an "X" pipe. Thats what I did and I love it! Loud when you want it, not when you don't, and no droning. Mine are straight thru design as well. Good luck.

    Ditto.

Mine droned until the X-pipe went on. The mufflers are still quiet after 8-years.

I had Walker Ultra Flows on another on my Buicks prior to buying the Magnaflows. They were only 2.5" versions and while they did allow the car to run good, they had a droning sound at some cruising speeds. Maybe with an X-pipe this would not be a problem. I also had something inside one of the mufflers break loose and start to make a rattling sound that was very noticable and annoying.

anyone running the flowmaster super 40's?

i was thinking about 3.5 collector, 3" pipes to the super 40's dumped before the axle, possible make a short pipe to have it dump just after the axle.

    do these flow good?

I run a 4.5" version of the 40series. They don't flow what a staight-thru muffler flows but I have never seen them slow a car down over a bullet or pick it up. I have worked on several race cars that have swap between them one way or the other and the difference was only the sound..... :Do No:

    Hi folks,

I have a 3" system w/ H pipe, Walker Super Turbos, and 2 1/2" tailpipes. After a few years, the fiberglass apparently burned out, or I got older, or both.

In any case, the noise became intolerable. I thought about switching to an X pipe, to quiet things down and maybe pick up a couple of ponies. but John Osborne, the Q-jet guru, advised against it.

He says it hangs way too low--below the driveshaft. Is this true? Does the X system hang that much lower than the H pipe?

I would still like to find a muffler with great flow, great noise control AND no fiberglass that will eventually burn out.

    Cheers,

My system looks just like Dougs. Mine does not hang low, and I have the 3 inch club exhaust. I think it is all in the way your headers hang. If they are made to hug the bottom of the car, your system will remain hidden. You really cannot see my headers, or my exhaust, unless you get on all fours next to the car and look up a bit. I hope this helps.

    Regards, John. :TU:
