    Herche advanced to the final in the 57-car field by outrunning Chuck Belanger in his Firebird SS/JA in round one, Ken Vaughn in his Corvette C/S in round two, Leonard Mattingly in his Firebird A/SA in round three, Kevin Wells in his Nova H/SA in round four, and Marissa Hammond in her Camaro H/SA in round five before having a bye in round six.
