I am in the middle of building a 426 Hemi and I do not have a car that I want to put it in. I also have a 1970 GS 455 that is currently without it's engine. (it's all in pieces, sitting on a cart in the shop). Has anybody ever seen a Hemi powered GS? Just kidding. JW said I would be crucified if I even put a big block Chevy in there..
If you do it, you can bring it out to the BPG Nats in Ohio ... hang out for the week and then the following weekend is the Mopar Nats ... that way you can be admonished by both groups :idea2:
Or pummeled to death by both! I actually have a buddy with a street rod who is running a blown 440...maybe we will throw it in there for fun. The Hemi has a tunnel ram/twin dominator intake. I already loaned a small block to another friend with a street rod last year...
Sure, and when you are done you can build the Buick engine and find yourself a Roadrunner to put it in. There was that 1/1 '68 flopper-bodied racecar that went with a Hemi. There are pics of the car floating around here someplace.
Paint it Buick Red and put some Buick 455 stage III stickers on it...you can say its a one of a kind hemi-headed Buick engine! LOL. I think pooping the hood to see triple dueces on top of a hemi would be pretty awesome but that's just me.
Pooping the hood????? OOOOOOK.... If you really want to get cussed put a dohc ford engine in it......:Brow:
It's your car, have some fun. Just because maybe nobody has done it before dosn't meen it shouldn't be done:beer
That is absolutely Ron Pelligrinei, that's the guy. Found these when your little pic refreshed my memory but the article says it has a 400. Maybe the 67 had the Hemi or this 68 later received one. Something like that happened.
Don't do it! Find a nice Mopar to drop the Hemi in and find a nice 455 to drop in the Buick. Your Buick and Mopar friends would not let you live it down otherwise. I would, but I guarantee they won't.
All this back and forth about Mopar v Buick reminds me of 1970 when I was going to the drags here in the NW at Woodburn drag strip. My buddies 70 Roadrunner Hemi/TF 3.54s ran 13.53.A couple 6 pack Bee’s ran mid 13s, a 4spd charger RT high 13s and two new 71 GS 455s(identical cars husband/wife team) low 14s. That’s what they ran new. My bone stock 68 Barracuda 340 outran the Buicks at 14.02 /104.I never saw an off the showroom car regardless of make run what a massaged so called stock original car runs now. None of those original unmassaged cars ran 12s.In that era nobody really gave a second look at Buicks. Each marque has it’s followers but most of the NW attention seemed to be Chevrolet.Buicks have a good following now in racing but I believe a lot of you started being serious about it after the Hemi/GS debacle years ago. Just weren’t many Buick racaers before that or when they were new. Just sayin.
Well, a local that I know made up a replica of Larry Detjens '70 Challenger (maybe Cuda) purple roundy round car. He was a pretty famous Wisconsin race car driver back in the '70's through '81 when he got killed in a race accident, and had a following. Memorial races around here every year. They used a small block Buick and put Hemi valve covers on it! Distributor up front so it "work". Actually doesn't look that bad and fools a lot of people!
Back in 84 my buddies and I went to Pomona for the NHRA world finals. We were Mopar guys and since all T/F and funny cars used Hemis we thought we would get a reaction from Larry Minor who was sponsored by Oldsmobile. My buddy walked to the edge of the pits where LM was signing autographs and asked him if his Oldsmobile Funny car had one of the new Oldsmobile Hemis in it. Some backwoods down home type asked LM if that was true. Is Oldsmobile making a Hemi he asked? Minor told us to get the hell away from his pits. We laughed about that for days.
Buick's shouldn't be disrespected like that! Mopar guy's always clam the the Hemi's are faster but we continue to show them what a Buick powered 455 GS can do! Save that motor for a Mopar and treat your Buick to a nice 455. I think she (Your Buick) will thank you!
