Got a phone call from a Soldier last night at work.. "Thanks Sergeant Major." He was calling from Iraq. He's on his 4th tour. I had to take a break afterward.

My Grandfather, John Vincent Mattiuz whom I never met. He retired as an Army Lt. Colonel.

He was German-born and after becoming a U.S. citizen served for many years. His boat landed at Normandy's beach on D-Day +1 day with the 104th Medical Battalion, 29th Infantry, and stayed with the troops as the allies pushed the Germans back.
