im thinking about graphing my hood scoop on my car. make it look more like its made. and cutting it to make it functional. or im thinking of doing like what was mentioned before graphing it to look like a gs hood. i want them funtional either way. with the gs way would i have to get a air cleaner like the star wars kind?

The Star wars air cleaner does not work with the GS style scoops like I have on the hood in my avitar. you will need the GS air cleaner set up like the pic below yo mate with the scoops.

Buddy of mine added a functional scoop to his cutlass using only old used parts and it worked out great. He spent about $50 all together since he did the work himself.

He took a shaker scoop from a 70's firebird and flipped it around so the opening pointed forward. Then he cut the hood to match the base portion. Fiberglassed it in place since it was a steel hood and a fiberglass scoop. Finished it off with an open top air cleaner that I had and wasn't using.

If you want to do it cheap and make it work then here's the air cleaner we used for his setup

Here's the scoop he used since he found one for cheap

    Tyler, do you mean "grafting"?

Sorry, but I can't recommend those old triangular Edelbrock air cleaners. One carb "sneeze" and you're sucking chunks of foam past the throttle blades.

I had that happen to mine. Car backfired up through the carb and it didn't blow chunks or anything. It did leave a nice smooth shiney spot on the inside of the filter where it melted a bit, but overall I'd say it was more flame resistant than a k&n deal since those are bathed in oil.

yes thank you Devon for correcting me on that. my bad.

i like the style of the gs hoods. and i like the shaker trans am hood. i was thinking of just grafting mine.. its a fiberglass one. it came off a 69 gran torino gt. and it looks pretty good on there.

Based on the pic I'd say mark and drill holes where the mounting tabs are. Then make a cardboard template of the opening on the bottom of the scoop and transfer the open portion to the hood. Then start cutting. You can use generic bolts/washers to bolt it down from underneath and basically sandwhich the hood. Then just lay some fiberglass/filler to smooth it in.

The biggest issue is cracking along the graft line from the steel and fiberglass expanding/contracting differently. I've never seen a fiberglass component on a steel hood that didn't develop cracks at the "smoothing" point after a couple years. Could try to track down a steel scoop and then get it welded in and never have to worry about it ever again :Do No:

snowcolt, what about looking for a stage 2 hood scoop. i believe that poston makes a reproduction. i always thought that would look cool on the x-bodies, plus you have a buick so it makes it workes on a few levels.

It would depend on your skills, your tools or your wallet. It can be done.

There is a thread called "got my hood back" and some other pics and threads about this same subject. Do a search and you can find everything you need. basically I bought the scoop section from a board member here. worked with my shop to place it where I wanted it and waited 8 Weeks for it to get done. I also bought all the intake stuff from guys here on the board. over all cost was over 1500.00 Makes me shudder when I think of spending that much cash on it but it makes me happy and my car a one of a kind.
