Gotta love my (kick-a**)kid!

So we just finished opening Christmas gifts, and my 18 year old son, who got some car parts for his winter project (stuffing a built 460 into a '70 Mach 1 Mustang), started to relay a story about an evening of street racing he had participated in this past summer while he "borrowed" my GS!

Seems there is a group up here in MN called Minnesota Street Racing (www.mnsr.org) that my son belongs to who promote street racing, all video-taped and posted on their web site! Now, they have recently moved their racing to an appropriate track rather than on the street, so they're getting smarter about it.

Anyway, appears to be a lot of Euro cars and the occassional Firebird, Camaro, Lightning, etc. Well Brandon (my son) spent an evening taking on a bunch (his words) of cars and says he never lost a race. I was a little miffed, as later on that summer my motor spun a rod bearing (currently being built by Jim W with all the good stuff!), but I couldn't help but smile as he told about kicking everyone's butt with my GS!

He said the video was on the web-site, but they update it often, and I could no longer find it there. I've contacted the group to see if they keep the videos on file somewhere, and will post a link if I get a hold of it. Gotta love a kid into American Muscle!!:beer

Ok.... now the spun rod bearing makes sense... :Dou:

Oh well, it was a 32 year old motor.. and will be a whole lot better when it gets done..

(note to self... make sure to install MSD with rev limiter, in case it gets "borrowed" after Cole's GS sucks up the kid's mustang, and spits it back out.. I can hear the stories already.. "my stang is fast, but you should see my Dad's GS run")

Since there hasn't been anywhere in town to legally race since MN dragways closed back around 1980, just where the heck is this "appropriate track"?
Is it in the Twin Cities metro area?
    I'm curious. :bglasses:

Well you would think he would be building a real car after driving the oldman's I guess you will have to spank his butt when your ride comes back from JW's. Hell while your at it go look up his buddy's.:Brow:

When I was 16 I was driving my dads 65 impala 396 4dr HT and we (a bunch of my friends) all went to the blvd for the first time and some guy wanted to race me in a camaro I have no idea why!!!:Brow: And we raced and I won as a matter of fact several races. Well the next morning my dad was MAD!! he came in a drop kicked me out of bed and drug me outside in my whity tightys at 7am and thru me down near his car and said and I quote "" EXPLAIN TO ME WHY THE TAILPIPES ARE WHITE AS SNOW AND THE BLACK RUBBER ALL OVER THE LOWER 1/4"S DONT EVER DRIVE MY CARS AGAIN YOU ARE COMPLETELY GROUNDED FROM DRIVING"""

Well all day I waited for him to come home so I couyld hear it all again and when he came home (He was a sheriffs officer) I bolted to the back yard to hide but he found me and in a real calm voice he says " Just tell me you beat all the cars you obviuosly raced""

Well was I off the hook .......NO but it made it better to know he was happy I had won :TU:

Well the Son put a lot of "go fast" goodies into his 460, but then again, he doesn't know that JW is installing aluminum heads (perhaps painted stealthy....not sure yet!) and doing a few other changes to really tweak the GS. I fully intend on giving him a spanking (on the strip in Brainerd!), THEN maybe he'll finally see the light and come on over from the Dark Side!

And Dale, you're right, nothing metro for a strip. They now make a 2-hour trek to Rock Falls Raceway over in Wisconsin to do their thing. Sure do mis the Minnesota Dragways......I can remember hearing the engines roar on Sunday mornings and I was probably 5 miles away as the crow flies!

Being young, streetracing, & borrowing Dad's car bring back quite a few memorys. Darn good thing my uncle was the district Judge :spank:

With all the MN residents in this topic, thought It might be a good place to ask. Anyone know if French Lake auto is open next week (at least after the 1st)?

After driving 800 miles & hanging out with the inlaws & 4 nieces & nephews, my highlight of the trip is usually to get out & pull parts in the cold. :TU:

AHHH... I see, I was hoping I hadn't missed out on something local all these years.
I grew up in Fridley, and even from there, a distance of maybe 8 - 10 miles you could hear them occasionally.
Spent alot of time at that strip during my high school days. Oh, the good 'ol days. :ball:

My guess is that French Lake is probably open as normal, although I think they're usually closed on Mondays if I remember right. It was actually one of their drivers that hauled back my son's Mach 1 from a yard in Phoenix.....they go out there about monthly to pick up cars for their own yeard. Great guys to work with! You may want to call Shawn or someone out there to check on the days they are open - 320-286-2560. Good luck!

Thanks Cole  ... love that place! Even when it's 19 degrees

Spent all day yesterday at French Lake. Though I've pulled parts in hundreds of yards, & even in the snow before, have never before had to scrape & scrape & scrape the (frozen) ground to get enough clearance to open a door on a car. Poor Chevelle body was froze to the ground :ball: Spent close to an hour & a half getting to the point that could remove this flawless lh '71-72 blue kickpanel out of the Chevelle (really tough to find nice non a/c kickpanels back home). Managed to fill the wagon with other stuff, prob could have pulled parts into the night, if I'd had my generator & lights...

While at French Lake, met a fellow by the name of Mike out of St Paul area. Mike has a '72 GS 350 convert he's about to sell. Mentioned v8Buick.com to him as a great resource. Going to show my Buick ignorance here but Mike's car is same blue as Lucerne Blue (Pontiac) or Viking Blue (Olds). Ought to make someone a cool cruiser.

Back to tales of abusing Dad's car(s)... & hopefully a new track for the MN faithful. :beer
