Goodyear 29x10 or hoosier 29x10 anyone have any experience with either of these slicks need a new tire for this season and these are the only ones that will fit ,:3gears: these damn bias slicks are too big in the section width and narrows the choices down. anyone using the smaller goodyearstuff anymore all you hear about is MT and Hoosier?
i like the hoosier slicks i used this last year. but my build isnt near as powerful as yours. no experience with goodyears.
I have the 29.5 x10.5 MT's on my car. With my limited exp and low # of runs with them I cant give a real knowledgeable review but I think they hook up and work great. My car ran 1.78/60' last pass on them.
My .02... I've run all of them (slicks) and my ranking is: 1) Phoenix....great hook all the way down to the cords....sticky compound 2) Hoosier....soft, work well but wear out faster than the others 3) Goodyear....good hook when new but go away too soon tractionwise 4) M/T....no luck on my faster cars with these.....just didn't hook as well as the others
We use Hoosiers on one of our cars. It's a pretty mild '70 skylark 455. This was our second year on them and they worked great. Good enough for my son to win the Mod. championship at our local track. There was usually between 60 to 80 cars a weekend. The car only runs 12.40's, but was very consistent. One day he had 6 passes in a row where the 60' only varied four thousands of a second. Unbelievable for a 8.5 to 1 motor with a Quadrajet! Scott
Adam, I have experience with the small wells on a 68/69 as well. My brother and I started running Hoosier radial drag slick 30x9 and it fits very well. The others that have a larger section width are a tough fit. Plus the radial slicks don't grow like bias ply and that helps out as well.
Adam I wouldn't recommend Radials at all,They won't like the hit of a clutch. The 29" Goodyear stuff seems to be better for lighter cars. I would look elsewhere......The best tire for you would be a 94" rollout. Too bad that wouldn't fit for you.
I use the Hoosier Radial Slicks. Im not sure if they have that exact size but I 1.55@60ft with a 30x9 and 22lbs of air.
I should have mentioned it was for a clutch car,Gary you are correct about the radial slick. I ran the Hoosier 30 10.5 radial for years with the auto and had mostly good success 1.33 -1.38 with the good engine 1.42-1.45 with the current junk engine.problem now is I tried the 29.5 9 mt stick tire and not much luck(never liked mt slicks in the past)dont want to cut the wheel tubs.the 1.53 60 ft needs to be paired down to a 1.40 shooting for a 10 flat before the old engine goes back in!
Gary, in your opinion how would the hit from a clutch car be different from leaving on the trans brake with an auto? Seems to me the shock to the tires would be about the same.
The converter flash would cushion the hit. Even w/ a transbrake in the cases I've seen the Radials are hit and miss.
yes the clutch does have more violence to it even with the low base pressure nothing like side stepping a clutch at 5700 ,the trans brake was i would say softer violence
Thanks guys. I have heard about the radial slicks being less forgiving than the bias ply. Especially on iffy tracks. So far I seem to like them though. Car 60' was around 1.36 last year. :beers2:
There are two parts that give in a manual trans car. The clutch set up and the tires. Not all tires would be suitable for a hard hitting manual car. I would look for a slick that had a compound dedicated to manual trans cars. Goodyear has a couple tires for manual cars with the D-3 compound being one example. Having a manual trans car dead hook would be really hard on parts. Your car setup is very different then a slower car with a auto. low 10 sec and bangin gears is killer. Do you race at Mission raceway...
yes thats our closest track, the clutch is setup to slip but you can only go so far untill you drive through it(found out last year on a greasy track ) my hope is with more gear i can keep the base pressure low and not slip it too much to the point of no return, but you can only go so far with that you still need a good tire and shocks and 9in slicks dont last that long on anything with power maybe 20 runs give or take i would like to put a true 10.5 and get 100 or so.
Around here alot of guys are running Hoosier QTP, me too. They have a 4ply sidewall and a flatter contact patch. I use 18.5x31 on my car.
Adam you have used the 10.5 slick? If so what bs were you running on the wheels? We briefly ran a 10.5 but it seemed to get all over the frame whenever the car turned. The section width was an issue for us.
todd i ran the 10.5 hoosier radial on a 15x10 with 5.5 bs my diff was narrowed 1 inch and with the ladder bar and wishbone it didnt move much the wheel tubs are stock but the frame was sectioned in 1/2 inch.
