This news SUCKS! I've never had a set of Goodyear's I've liked. They have been underperforming crap each. And. Every. Time. The last set I replaced after less than 2 years and 15k miles. On the other hand I currently have Cooper's on 3 vehicles and once they were due to be replaced, the next sets were going to be Cooper's again. But if crapyear.....errrr.....I mean "good"year puts their touch on Cooper tires, I won't be buying any more.
Wow, lot of hate for Goodyear out there. That's unexpected for me. I've had good luck with them, but it's only me and I don't go through a lot of tires.
We have Cooper Cobra RWL on almost all of the cars and have had good luck with them. If they discontinue them I need to find a raised white letter alternative. Just replaced the factory Goodyear’s on the 2017 Ram with more Goodyear’s, so far so good but I wish I had seen Ed’s post before getting them.
I thought about Hoosier too. Seams to me I heard Cooper owned them as well but A search says they are owned buy Continental.
Goodyear bought Kelly a while back and shut down plants and drove them into the ground. I guess that's what big companies do to their competition.....
That’s great. I’ve had real good luck w continental tires. The Hoosiers weigh quite a bit less than comparable Mickey Thompson’s in the radials I use to race on. Work great too.
Goodyear got out of the belt and hose business years ago; a company called Veyance Technologies was making everything under the G/Y name. Recently Veyance switched their label to Continental, so if you liked a G/Y belt or hose it’s now Contitech or something. As far as the tire buyout, I guess we’ll have to nervously wait and see. I put Goodyear fuel max tires on my truck, they were so bad they couldn't be balanced. Took them off after 3,000 miles and put Coopers on.
For Daily drivers, I stick with the French... tough to beat Michelin for all around performance, comfort, and longevity. 80 K on a set on my Suburban has been about the norm. A bit higher cost to get into them, but you save money in the long run, and get to enjoy them in between. How much weight they take to balance is a good indicator of tire quality.. my last set on the Suburban was impressive, I think the all 4 had less than 5 oz on them combined. I have seen that on one tire with the cheap stuff. Hopefully the Coopers keep on going, we have a real issue with tire availability for our older Buicks, Cooper and BFG, that's really it.
I want to say that I have had good Goodyear tires. Not all their tires are crap. But over the years I have had some bad ones. So far all my experience with Cooper tires has been positive. And back in the 80's and into the 90's Goodyear made what I thought was one of the best tires for old muscle cars - the Eagle ST. I ran them on my 71 Stage 1 and had no complaints. I always worry when a larger company buys out a smaller one. They usually make changes and some or most are not for the better.
I remember that in the late ‘80s the Eagle ST was THE TIRE for musclecars. Then I started hearing complaints about hard compounds and belts seperating as the world migrated to Radial T/As. That was about the time that Goodyear seemed to be moving toward late model, low profile OE business while BFG was courting performance car (new and old) replacement business. Now BFG is faltering (high price, slipping quality) and Cooper is after the replacement biz. Maybe Goodyear wants that market back and figured ‘buy out the folks who know how to do it; we abandoned it and forgot how’. Patrick
I agree Mike, I was sorry to hear of the demise of the 14 and 15 inch Eagle tire line by Goodyear. I had Eagle GT's on several cars I owned in the 80's, always liked that tire. The ST tire with the solid white letter looked great on GS's. Kelsey is actually remaking the Eagle GT under contract from Goodyear, although the 2K price tag for a set of 4 is a bit unrealistic.. Goodyear made I think the Invicta in early 90s for Toyota new cars. What a mess. They were anything but round. They argued a Toyota about alignment specs and such. We just replace them with cheaper tires and problem solved. Tho they needed 5000 mile rotations to not wipe out fronts. Don’t know about other brands of car oems.
Thats interesting in the recall it names some of the most crappy tire known to mankind at least here in the PNW the multi-mile tire is so slippery no can grip there ok for down in the southern states.. Didn't know Cooper made them... Looks like I'll stick with BFG's or others
