I would like not to sacrifice the stock looking hood, and therefore thinking a front spoiler for scooping up fresh air in the engine compartment, but does it work.?

Ryans-GSX Have fun, life is short.

I am no expert. I believe it helps some but I am not sure it's really going to make all that much difference. I surely cant hurt.

I think the old Poston Catalogs claimed 30 or 40HP on their ram air front spoiler but I have never installed mine so I can't confirm any of those claims.

I believe the one that work best was the one Jim Turner had set up on his blue stage 2 GS Ran duct work from behind the headlights direct shot and was probably used a decent size air breather for more air. Maybe stage2 Pat can verify he currently owns the car and it was probably on the car when he bought it .

I had the KB ram air spoiler and breather The problem with the breather is you can't use a 4 inch filter with a 1 inch spacer with a B4B under the carburetor . I used a 3 inch breather and it still hit the hood. Maybe a TA SP-1 intake would work.

I had a home built prototype spoiler with larger opening than the poston style,..3.5in tubes iirc completely sealed home built air cleaner that held a 3in element,..was worth 3mph and 3tenths on my car vs no air cleaner cleaner,..I swear you could feel the difference over 50mph if you just eased into it

I had the old Poston spoiler on my '72 for many years! I liked the look but doubt I got an extra 30 horses out of it.

100% truth. Its airflow that you are redirecting..
On one my 93 dodge Cummins 4x4 the front springs were dead and sagging. I put new springs nothing else. the front of the truck rose 2 1/2 to 3 inches. I lost 4 miles to a gallon.

With my experience I was at Silver Dollar Raceway in Reynolds GA for what was one of our GSCA races,..was tinkering with the car Lassiter walks over and says "I bet that ram air is slowing you down" I'll try new things so I took it off went 3mph and 3tenths slower,...he comes over and says put that thing back on! I backed that pass up with the same result

Ethan did you use a baffle with the spoiler ?

If that ram air spoiler (and of course the proper air cleaner and tube routin) gets an extra 3mph I might reconsider using it.
I paid a fair amount for it (plus crated shipping charge arrrrgh) but was thinking about going stock.
If I get a wild hair I might throw it in the truck on the way to the Nats & see if someone wants it more than me lol

If it's a legit 3/10 and 3 miles I'm gonna find a way to make it work with the SPX intake manifold.

IMG_3415.JPG IMG_3416.JPG just measure the filter was actually a 2 1/2 inch filter and it still hit the hood with b4b an 1inch Spacer going to have to add a torque strap.

I've seen a "styles" VW golf with complete bodykit covering the grill and front spoiler, and it didn't run hot or any different than with the stock grill/spoiler with only 1/4 pie cut out of a blue plastik drum, and secured with zip ties, lowered down behind the front spoiler, in front off the radiator.. It must have some effect.. If made into a du t, directed to the airfilter, I bet you could gain simulair effect as Hugger..

Similar to Ethan.I had a 72 455 convertible(which I would love to have back).I made a couple scoops, ran 4"drier vent hose to a sealed air cleaner.Again home made It had an old offy or b4b cant remember but it was worth 3 mph and 2 tenths.took it off and back on a few times to verify

You may have just been jetted rich and a little extra air leaned it out some. Ive never seen spoiler fed air systems that work, too many bends in the tubing to be considered “ram” air. But hey, I could be wrong.

I have the headlight ram air set up that was on Coyote . I believe it was helpful . I never tested it . Not sure if it was cold air or ram air or both . I can dig it out and take pics if you want . The core supt holes for the Headlights must be opened up too . .... A spoiler with out a baffle may direct some air under hood but will just creat more pressure and turbulence at speed imho

Back in the mid-90's I designed and built an all aluminum Ram Air Box and Under Bumper Entry system. I tested it at BG in '95 and it was worth just over 2-1/2 tenths (edging out my 16" x 3" BSR open element air cleaner). I can't recall the mph increase though. I incorporated a K & N (16" x 3") element that can be placed inside for street driving, .... for track use with the filter element out, the under bumper entry had 1/4" screens over the throats to keep the kicked up debris out from the cars in front in the water box. The trick was to design it to fit my Holley 4500 Dominator Carburetor and still fit under the hood. The under bumper entry system was so stealth that it could only be seen from roughly 20' in front of the car, ..... and even at that you had to be really looking for it. For the ducting I didn't want to use any of the common flimsy plastic/vinyl rubble. Instead I used my Shop's Corvette Restoration experience to put the C1 Corvette 4" fresh air intake hoses into place, ..... seeing that it is heat resistant and won't collapse. The hoses are attached to the air cleaner box with quick release clamps for fast access to the carburetor.
