Dear V-8 Buick fans who either live in California or keep an eye on California politics,

There was some hope for a reprieve from California's harsh pollution rules because what became known as "Leno's law." Sadly, Hemmings has a report this morning that the bill has been "revised" in such a way that it looses most of the benefit for many classic car collectors:

    Oh well, . . . . Edouard :(

Clean air is a necessity. Collecting cars is a hobby. I do not support rolling back progress on a public health issue we have spent decades trying to improve,” Democrat State Sen. Aisha Wahab said in a statement.

As always, the devil will be in the details. I don’t object to some scrutiny so that never collectible ever beaters being driven daily aren’t included, but how strictly will cops enforce the ‘exhibitions, parades and club activities’ part? If your ‘club’ is the ‘drive my GS on sunny days’ club, then shooting down to the parts store or out for breakfast IS a ‘club activity.’
I suspect cops have better things to do…especially around LA right now!
(edit: the worst and questionably enforceable part, will be requiring ‘collector’ insurance. Who defines that?)

That's a huge container of male bovine excrement! Classic cars aren't daily drivers by and large. They don't see 1,500 miles a month like a daily driver would.

If we all showed up to the borders with jack hammers and started working that dotted line...

Just another one of the thousands of reasons why I can't stand CA. They really need to seek to become their own country, and jack hammering along the dotted line would be a great start. They can drift away.

I would assume (and when we are talking about California, assuming is dangerous) that the car meet emission standards that were in effect when the car was built. Older cars tend to be higher in CO and HC emissions, and lower in NOx which is the biggest contributor to smog.

I thought about buying land the San Andreas mountains and praying either sea level rises or the big quake hits and it slides into the ocean. Either way I'd have beach front/island property. I just don't have a million years or so.

Emissions testing just adds to pollution. You have to drive the car to the test, sometimes wait in line idling away, then it has to run during the test. Afterwards, you drive back to your house or work.

I am, however, old enough to recall LA in the smog era of the 60s and 70s. Thank goodness technology has improved that situation.

To think old vehicles amount to anything significant in the way of emmisions, just shows their ignorance.

I am a native Californian, still live here. Cannot wait to leave. But with a father in failing health, I am not going anywhere while he is here, so...

Praying for a huge earthquake that could potentially kill thousands is a whole 'nother kind of asinine. Like the politics here or not, there's a lot of good hard working patriotic Americans that live here. Don't throw us all in the same boat.

The real issue in California, is that LA should never have been built. There are mountains to it's East which prevent the wind from dissipating the smog. Additionally they effectively steal all of their water from the San Francisco area. Mulholland Drive is named for the Engineer (William Mulholland) who designed and built the system that brings the water to LA. There is no significant naturally-occurring fresh water in Southern California. LA's smog is a self-inflicted injury.
