I have finally found the engine code on the 71 350 block in my 68 GS350. It's been painted over, so is hard to see. I had to pull the valve cover(needed to anyway) then I could shine a light at the angle needed to see it. It looks to be TD 057. The info on Buicks.net says TD is from a 4bbl Le Sabre. That's a little disappointing. I knew my 350 wasn't original, but was hoping it was at least a GS engine. I do know that it came out of a Skylark, but that previous owner didn't know if it was in that car originally either. Oh well. Strangely, the T and D are spread quite a ways apart. Is that normal? They aren't really next to each other at all. Does the "057" mean anything?
David - Besides the 1970 GS350 Hi-compression motor, all Buick 350s were identical - same heads, valves, pistons, carb, etc.. The only advantage the 1971-1972 GS motors had above the other models was the air induction and dual exhaust - and you could get duals as an option on the other cars. With regard to the spacing, these codes were stamped by people, not machines. We all sometimes do just what it takes to get a job done, with no emphasis on perfection. The 057 is the production code and I think it has something to to with when the engine was originally assembled (which shift or something like that) HTH.
Thanks Marco. This engine is a "frankenstein" anyway. Let's see, 1971 block, 1972 heads, 1972 intake, newer Carter AFB 625cfm carb w/elec choke and spacer/adapter, Edelbrock chrome air cleaner housing, and rebuilt: bored 30 over, balanced, forged hi comp TRW pistons, mild Wolverine cam(WG-1033), whatever the heck that is..... I guess that's about all.
WG-1033 cam specs off of Desktop Dyno Cam disk... cam specs seat-to-seat... intake lift .400 exhaust lift .416 Lobe center 112 valve overlap 32 Intake Duration 252 Exhaust Duration 260 intake valve open 19 btdc intake valve close 53 abdc exhaust valve open 67 bbdc exhaust valve close 13 atdc Gives description of stock idle, good low end torque and pulling power... What all that means??? o No: It's all Greek to me!!! Hope this helps...
Jim, thanks a lot! I got no real info on the cam with the pile of receipts that came with the car. Stock idle though?? I can't say that I know what a stock 350 should sound like, but I've got stock exhaust manifolds, larger dual exhaust(haven't measured the diameter) and flowmasters. There's a bit of a lope to the idle, but it is very smooth. And even with the 2.56 posi rear, it accelerates very well. I wonder where I can find the specs for a stock 68 cam?
