Factory in dash tach that was recently rebuilt by Scott Moody. Tach is grounded to the speedometer (lights work). Ran the brown wire from the single spade on the back of the tach to the “tach” spade on the cap. As soon as I hooked it up, the car dies and will not start. Once removed from the spade, car starts and runs fine. Thoughts?
Check that brown wire connection at the distributor. Measure from that connector with an ohmmeter and see if it is grounding somewhere.
Larry- I am thinking it's grounding somewhere along the way or at the tach, correct? Just hate to take the dash out.... Again... LOL
Yes, hopefully the wire is the problem. I'm sure Scott tested the tachometer before he sent it to you. I can't imagine how the signal terminal is grounded internally. Scott did my tachometer over, I opted for the conversion to a better mechanism/movement. I have separate Power, Ground, and Signal leads. It works flawlessly. I checked it against the Autometer I had in there for years before I pulled the dash. I always wanted to use the stock tachometer, but it was so inaccurate before I sent it to Scott. That stock tachometer is hooked to an MSD Digital 6 box.
George, just disconnect the wire at the back of the tach, leaving it connected at the distributor. Should be able to reach up behind the gauges. Try that as a first step.
X2, if you simply remove the radio trim plate, and the radio if necessary, you can reach back there and disconnect the wire. Run a separate wire to the distributor to see if that is the problem.
Spent a little time out there today… tach wire was pinched under the brake booster grounding out… lol. thanks guys!
