Ever feel overlooked?

I have a 1970 Buick GS Convertible and live in the pacific northwest. I have restored the car to a very respectable shape. I have shown the car at various car shows in different parts of Oregon and I find it interesting how badly the car is overlooked by other people that are showing their cars. The car is a real crowd pleaser but I find very few people that know what it is and just how rare it is. I mean when you compare it to other cars at these shows it truly is a rare automobile. Have you ever noticed how many 55, 56, and 57 chevy's there are at car shows? I don't even think they are rare there are so many of them. Normally I find very few if any Buicks at these shows and as of this date I have only found one other 70 GS at a car show besides mine and it was a hardtop. I get really tired of people saying what is it a 442 :af: a chevelle :af: or "thats a nice GTO ya got there" :af:. Understandably Buick GS's aren't exactly marked well as far as the buick markings go as the only place it say's Buick on the outside is in the grill and a blended buick sign plate in the rear bumper that does't exactly show up all that well. But GS is marked everywhere on the car. I am kind of getting off track here I guess. The point I am trying to make is that other people showing their cars have a tendency to shun or thumb their noses at buicks. While the people that come to view them seem to love them. When it comes down to voting on the cars I find that many of these car owners are very clannish and have a tendency to vote over and over for their friends cars. I really don't care about winning trophies, but it would be nice to have some recognition. I have only been to one car show that was all Buick and it definately was noticed, hey I took 2nd place in the stock class. Anyone else run into this? I guess its a gray hair thing as most older people drive buicks. Well I am one of them but mine isn't anything like the ones you see on the street nowdays.................I do love eating up rice burners though :3gears: ..................."POPS"

    You're not alone!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Buicks.

You're experiencing the same as most people here

I've stopped going to 'regular' car shows as I love to drop the top and cruise instead :Brow:

Well thats exactly what I have started doing. I would just as soon drive my GS out in the public and watch peoples faces as they oooh and aah over it. I do intend to keep showing it at Buick events though at least when you are around your peers they enjoy your ride and you can enjoy theirs. The only problem is out here in the Pacific Northwest they don't have many Buick shows............POPS

    POPS,

Where are you in the Pacific NW? There is a big all Buick show in Puyallup WA in June (June 11th, I think) that you should try to make it to. About 175+ Buicks last year, several from OR and Canada in addition to WA.

Even a Red 70 GS convertible with a pearl white bench seat interior...... I would love to see your car!

I've seen a lot of that at shows where a good high quality car is overlooked because they are "lesser known" makes or models. I know a guy who has an original 32 Ford roadster with ardun heads and hilborn injection and hardly no one at the cruises looks at this car. Once it was parked by a very average Chevelle while I was going over the details in the engine on the duece and this dummy says " is that what I think it is?" referring to the engine. I said "yep, you don't see many of these" and he says "oh there's another "hemi" a couple rows over". So I proceeded to call him everything short of a complete idiot and walked off before I gave the guy a well deserved whack  Moral of the story is...there are a lot of people out there who don't have a clue what they are looking at, I guess we need to "educate the masses."

"What kind of car is that??" is the most common question.
I would love to "SS Chevelle" badge a GS just to see the reaction  Later,Tony.

I am in Roseburg, Oregon, I may just take you up on that as it is way more fun to be with other Buick owners. How far up into Washington is Puyallup?I looked at the thread showing the pictures and my GS is like Larkins. I need to get some pictures up here and show it off I guess. Thanks for the information....... :beer ....POPS

Don't feel bad.........I get the same crap.......I just keep going to things anyway and I really enjoy it when someone notices my car and says "I never knew Buick made a motor with factory dual quads!" ........makes it all worth it.......just sucks when lesser cars go home from peer judged shows with trophies just because nobody will vote for a Buick. :af:

I see the same chromed up chevelles and mustangs winning all the time around here.........it's the judged shows that usually (now I did say USUALLY  ) don't discriminate. When the Buick is home parked in the garage or in the spectator parking lot, it only makes them less noticed.......we need to get out and make our presence known......maybe then some of these jokers won't think a GS is just a wierd looking chevelle.

Take the Buick to a cruise night......let 'em see what a real muscle car is! :Brow:

    POPS,

It is a decent haul from Roseburg, about 325 miles. I know last year we had several guys from OR caravan up. There is also an All Buick show in OR, I think it is in Gresham? Somebody on here should know. I think it is in July/August.

Hope you can make it up here. And yes, definitely get some pictures posted!

    That's why we own Buicks

Ain't nothing wrong with being overlooked or misjudged, hate to say it, but don't think I would have gotten into Buicks, if it wasn't for the fact that they were not Chevy, Ford or Mopar. Buicks are underpriced for what they are worth, and once you blow the doors off somebodies higher price Mopar etc, you are hooked.

I know that is a bit off thread about the car show judging, but hell, there is no accounting for taste or judges.

Can you imagine the guys that are into AMCs?

Pops, I have been to 2 car shows now with my 71 GS and got barely any reaction from the mostly Chevy crowd. At first I was a little disappointed, but then realized that was to be expected, and it really dosen't bother me at all.
As a matter of fact I really kinda like it now. Guess it's kind of a low key, underdog, sleeper thing, if you what I mean.
A little off topic, but I remember back when Metallica (if you know who they are) was a underground metal band and barely anyone knew who they were and I thought they were the best thing since sliced bread. Then they become a huge act, and that kinda took all the fun out of it.
Don't know if it relates much to this, but I like the fact Buicks don't get the respect they really do deserve. That is until they blow the doors off a BB Chevy. :Brow:

Can't agree with this more. When I started looking for a convertible for the wife I couldn't believe some prices for the other GM lines so I started looking at Buicks. When I started looking at them I realized I like the lines of the car a lot better than their GM sisters. I don't think I could have bought a Chevy or Pontiac convertible for twice what I bought my Buick for...and it looks better to boot. As far as being overlooked it doesn't bother me because my other car is a 53 Chevy which is a mild custom. Nobody around here even knows what it is until I tell them.

I think one of the reasons that a lot of us own a Buick is a desire to own something just a little different. SomethingI have noticed is that Buick People seem to search for other Buick people.

Trevor you sure got that right. When I go to any show the first thing I do is search out any Buick of any vintage and really listen to the owner talk about it. Then tell them about this place to meet others :TU:

    Not just Buicks -

I feel your pain...that's the problem with having cars that are "sleepers". Usually folks don't look at my Chevelle until after I've gone a few rounds late in the day on Sunday.

But here's my favorite: our '65 GTO is just a plain black wrapper, no lettering or anything. While we were doing a photo shoot for a magazine article (which ended up being a two part series) we had a guy come over and ask us to move our car so HE could get a picture of his 2001 Grand Prix. :af:

If you really want to feel ignored, try showing up in a LeSabre! (LOL!)

All I can say is this: Take pride in what you drive. I would never want to drive something that's common. I like being different and knowing that my car is as original as I am.
