Engine noise

Hi everyone. I'm new to the board and I hope some of you experts out there can give me a hand.

I just had my '71 GS 350 restored which included having the engine rebuilt. For the first 300 or 400 miles the engine ran fine and made no unusual noises. Since around the 400 mile mark I've noticed a clattering noise coming from the engine. The sound is most obvious when I'm accelerating yet can still be heard after taking my foot off the gas. It appears to be a little more prevelant when the engine is cold. It now has about 1000 miles total since the rebuild and the sound is no better or worse than it was at the 400 mile mark. I've not done much to diagnose/fix the problem except to have the timing checked.

In regards to the engine rebuild with the exception of adding headers and a Competition Cam and lifter kit everything else was left stock. The heads were taken to a local machine shop and they performed a valve job and refaced the heads. The push rods and rockers were not replaced so the originals are still in there. The rockers are on a shaft so there's really not much adjusting I can do. However, I did verify that the shaft was torqued down according to specs.

I know that this could be a rather broad problem but I was hoping some of you could offer me some suggestions. I'm not very technical so even the simplest of suggestions will be appreciated.

    Regards,
    Chris

    Chris,
You mentioned that the heads were resurfaced. Depending on how much, your lifter preload may be off. The lowest cost way to fix that is adjustable pushrods available from TA Performance, or Postons.
