Does anyone know off hand what this wire is for? It's near the coil. Not connected to anything. On my 72 GS 350. I can't find it in my service manual.

Apparently I don't have one. Was it only on some 72s? And I have only one wire going down to trans kickdown switch.....but I do have the vacuum port valve on top of intake.

The kickdown switch is correctly one. You should have another connector at your pedal.
The vacuum port can be omitted, it's emission related.

Okay thanks. I'm thinking it may have never had the TCS on the carb?

The 350-2 had the thermo vacuum switch on the intake.

Yes the 2bbl had it mounted on a stud at the thermostat housing. And they were for sure on all 70-72 cars. Not sure about other years.

This is the most common TCS system for the 1972 350-2 with A/C.

The 4bbl set up was different.

Ok. Of course my GS is 4bbl. Just seems odd car wouldn't have the second wire going down to the trans switch. The terminal looks like a wire was never there. Tcs can't function in 3rd gear without it...... Doesn't really matter. I'll bypass it of course

On the 4 bbl, the TCS mounts to the top of the carb, beneath the head of the front carb mounting bolt.

The TCS is a gas mileage and performance killer. I would eliminate it. On a concourse car, I would disable it in a way you could not see.

My '72 GS did not have as it was an export car (to Canada) from Fremont. our pollution requirements were behind those of the U.S.

So my 72 th350 trans has only one wire going down to the switch on trans that comes from the tcs connector. There is no wire for kick down? A cable on accelerator pedal is used for kickdown instead of a wire?

THM400 has an electrical kick down, THM350 has a cable activated kick down.

Thanks again for the info. I'll eliminate the wire going down to trans.

The wire that goes to the tran. activates TCM (changes the vacuum advance from port to manifold or vice versa) only when the tran is in 3rd gear. So the sensor in the tran simply tells the system that it is in 3rd gear. Least that's how I think I remember it works.
