I need a pair of bucket seat headrests, I have 2 back ones, can these be dyed pearl or should I try to start with a light color? 70 GS

When you change color on vinyl/plastic parts you are painting them, not dying. I would think a couple good coats would cover the black just fine.
SEM calls their vinyl paint "Color Coat". sem paint.jpg

You can get some black vinyl remnants at a fabric store or upholstery shop and try it. See if it matches!

If I remember there is a post somewhere on here about the pearl color. I think you do the white and then a coat of pearl to get the final effect.

Wouldn't this be true whether or not changing colors?

If you have a dark color to begin with, you'll need to spray a white base, then pearl coat on top of that. @1972 Stage 1 has mentioned the process here in the past.
