I'm also in Canada so that works out nicely. Sounds like a pretty similar situation in most places though.
I'm keeping an eye out, but I have found one new online for a couple hundred bucks that looks to be the same size. Still waiting on the weather to get a bit nicer so I can move the car out of the backyard and put it up on ramps to measure it all out.
Not Ryan, where in Canada are you? I'm in Ontario and live in a rural area so sound/noise bylaws are pretty relaxed and not much is done/enforced unless you're a complete asshat making an abundance of noise for no reason or at like 2am in suburban areas. In your area the noise bylaws may be a bit more strict. I say go for the dual exhaust and a decent muffler setup as loud obnoxious exhausts get old quick so I highly doubt you'll have one that creates too much of a problem anyways.
Here's what my exhaust sounds like, not too loud but nice tune to it, no drone at cruising speeds either.
I run dual 3” with magnaflow on my 350, sounds great. It’s not hard for any novice fabricator to notch the crossmember for duals.
I'm out in Alberta where the lifted truck guys have their way with noise bylaws, so I'm not super concerned. I've been looking into what kind of muffler I'd want and so far I'm thinking definitely something like you and Sean have got. I like that throatier sound for sure. As far as problems go, one of my coworkers came up to me one day last year and asked about the car. She was saying she saw one very similar to mine making a whole lot of noise by her house, so I had to apologize because as far as I know there's not another brown on brown mid '70s full size in the area that would be making that much noise. Kinda worries me a bit to be honest but hey, that's why I'm considering a new exhaust right?
Mikes custom exhaust in Sherwood park is very good and he has no issues with doing catless exhausts. He did my truck with dual Magnaflow, he may even be able to notch the crossmember for the dual exhaust.
It's actually fairly complicated. You'd need to research HOW the state/province measures the exhaust noise--right side, left side, or noisiest side? What angle from the vehicle? Does the law require measuring in dBA, or dBC scale? (Or some other scale.) "A" scale filters the sound to mimic how the human ear responds to various frequencies. Does the law use peak readings, or averaged readings, and if averaged, what time period? Peak readings tend to be higher than averaged readings if there's a lot of impulse noise. And then, of course--idle, fast idle, some other engine speed--in neutral or in gear, and how many feet away from the vehicle. Not all laws will be written the same. Wild Guess: The law will be very poorly written, leaving huge gaps, loopholes, or ambiguity. They're pretending to be "scientific" but without covering all the bases. Motor vehicle regulations in my home state seem to have been written by middle-school students. It's terrifying.
yes here I’m pretty sure they stick a mic a certain distance from the vehicle and then rev it to a certain RPM to measure the DB. And yes it’s very subjective. I haven’t had an issue but I always run mufflers. We have tons of diesel trucks with no mufflers and it’s way too noisy.
