Just finish watching The Tomorrow War on Amazon. I thought it was pretty good! A couple of story flaws (as usual) but a good flick. Check it out if you have Amazon Prime and like SciFi.
First, YES! I LOVE SCIFI! They hyped that movie for so long that I was glad it finally dropped. Now, the plot holes were not so bad as to be unbelievable. I've always said bad SciFi is better than no SciFi. Without giving anything away, I was entertained by the movie and I thought they made great effort to establish time travel continuity. The fact they had J.K. Simmons was the perfect casting for that character. Have you watched the JK Simmons in the Starz (also on Amazon Prime) show Counterpart? It has a cold war vibe to it and takes place primarily in Germany but still deals with multiple universes that are almost the same but not quite. Unfortunately, it ends at season two because the audience was too male.
Do I like sci-fi, What a question. I liked it before it was fashionable. I started reading it as a kid and have a large collection of the books. The neat thing is Phila used to have a sci-fi convention each year and would bring in one of the well known book authors. I have tons of first editions and used to bring my books to get them signed. I met Asimov, Fred Pohl, Larry Niven, Charles Sheffield, etc. I used to have a bunch of the toys, but sold most of them off when the prices for the stuff went insane, but I did keep a few toys from Buck Rogers of the 40’s. As far as the movies, I have a ton of sci-fi DVD’s and some of them are very obscure hard to find movies. Duane PS. If anyone is looking to let go of any sci-fi dvd’s let me know and I can get you a list of the movies I am looking for.
By the way, if you want to read something crazy, the first edition of Ringworld has the main character trying to extend his 200th birthday by traveling around the world to different time zones, so it lasts more then 24 hours. The problem was Niven had him traveling backwards through the time zones, so the world was revolving backwards. Later editions fixed this, but I have a 1st edition and it is signed. Duane
It actually took a while, I am busy today. Duane Here is a sci-fi question, “Do you know what Tuesday’s are?”
I may have known at one time but I don't any more. A little more of a hint? Perhaps the author or a character? I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey in the theater when it was still first run. I didn't understand half of it but I loved it. The theater was nearly empty. I read the book several years later and the rest of the series before 2010 came out. I've been reading SciFi since I was introduced to something other than comic books back in the mid 70s. A friend gave me a copy of The Dragon and the George by Gordon R. Dickson. I was hooked. Reading The Hobbit at 14 was hard enough. Reading Lord of the Rings was a year long challenge. From there I read two or three books a month until I got my driver's license. Then, BUICKS. I average a few books a year now. I envy you having met all those authors. I've never been to a convention that wasn't IT related.
I started reading SF in the mid 60s, and did until life just got busy with business and family. Getting old, and TBI, I am finding it hard to remember everything. But I had a danged good memory for a long time. It was a good run... So, I cannot recall "Tuesday", but I remembered "Friday" (although it was a bit offbeat at the time, for my taste). I've been fraki my entire life. But the contempt is not mine.
Yeah I have been fortunate with a few things in my life. Asimov was a blast. Beyond the fact that he was one of the smartest people I ever met, he came off as a regular guy and had a real sense of humor. If a girl came up and wanted an autograph all he wanted was a kiss on the cheek. I saw him do this a few times and his wife just stood there and smiled, like she was used to it. Ok you need a hint, think of Charlton Heston.
Still no recollection. I've forgotten more than I will ever be able to recall. A Planet of the Apes reference? Soylent Green? Omega Man? Those are the only ones I can think of and I have not seen them in decades.
“Tuesday is Soylent Green Day.” I have that posted over my desk at work. Of course everyone at work knows that now. All I have to do is ask them what day it is on a Tuesday and they let me know. Everyone thinks I’m weird anyway because I play with old cars, so what the heck. Duane
