Haven't seen a post in this forum in what seems like years. I used to get a kick out of the banter. Everyone driving Teslas now?
I considered getting involved with pure stock awhile back but, even with my warmed over “stocker” was no match for those 600 Hp rule pushing cars. Just didn’t care to spend that kind of money and also make my GS less fun to cruise with. I still read about the events though.
They go to face book so they can cry about us over here. You think it is dead here you should look at the 350 section totally dead there not any racers giving results of anything.
well. I'm still here probably only cause I have a Buick. On facebook, there is a healthy group of participants, and I get why they switched platforms - from a communications standpoint its more user freindly. As far as retirees, I've only been involved for the last ten years or so, and most of the people I started racing with are still around and active. I do see a lot of "next gen" kids getting involved, and the events have been pretty well attended despite covid and economy issues. And Ray, I think youre missing the point of the series, or at least getting it confused with FAST..there are plenty of PSMCDR cars that are fast enough to disqualify themselves (11.50 rule) with maybe 480 hp. You get paired with the guy that runs closest to your qualifying time and run heads up best of three, and thats challenging at any ET level. My 71 GS is built withing the rules and runs anywhere from 12.6 - 13.0 depending on weather with a dyno'd 415 HP - street driven, pump gas.. In any given event, there are 20-25 competitors in that high to mid 12 second range that can put their quailifying time down again within a hundredth at willl, so I'm paired with a car that is just about exactly equal to my own. Now the race is based on skill, not HP.. who can read the track, find the groove, chop the tree and put it all together constantly. Honestly, I'm just as engaged in a my 14 second car as I am in my 12 second car. Any car can be built to run any number, but how many guys can make that car give 110 % again and again??.. Thats what its about. So ditch the headers and come on out!
Thanks for explaining the format for me. Causes me to maybe rethink getting in on the fun. This year in Bowling Green was the first time I entered the BSA class with my ‘70. It ran mid 12s on soft launches. So how do the rules differ between PSMC and BSA? My car is totally stock appearing cosmetically and under the hood except for 15x8Buick Rallyes on the rear with Drag radials.
Hey Ray, here's the link to the rules: https://www.psmcdr.com/rules I cant say how they differ, I've never looked at the BSA rules but I'd imagine BSA is more like FAST where you can do anything you want to the engine internally Right off the bat, you'd have to switch over to a 7 inch rim and A 235/60 or G-60 tire and THATS the great equalizer, HP wont do you much good if you arent an artist at putting it down. The absolute best 60 fts are in the 1.7's, I'm able to pull off a 1.82 on street radials. The cam isnt strictly legal either, but depending on how it sounds you might get away with it until you start hurting peoples feelings. If there was anything that matters most, its consistent 60 fts.. if you can pull that off in all conditions (and Stanton is notoriously "changeable") then you're a contender. But if your just in it to have a good time win or lose, come on out. It's still a major event with like minded people who are SUPER accommodating and helpful to the new guy. There's a huge Buick contingent (Buick is generally the third highest representation , behind Chevrolet and Pontiac) and the event organizers are pretty good about letting you run giving you a year to fix any rule violations (assuming theyre not safety related) I expect we'll have a 125 -140 car field this year, and any given car could take top honors at a local show, theyre all that nice.. And if youre into it, you can camp at the track, which might not be a bad idea given the closer hotels are generally booked by now. Feel free to PM or call with any specific questions. Its a real chill, minimal ego event, I'll never miss another.
Ray, unfortunately your car would need to have the painted aluminum heads replaced with a set of ‘70 model cast iron heads in order to run at the PSMCDR.
