I was wondering about building a destroked 455. Any thoughts on where to get say a 3.48" stroke crank?

Weld and offset grind, or is there some other way that doesn't involve cubic dollars and years of waiting?

3.65" stroke could easily be done the same way the cranks are offset ground to a 4.15" stroke using a 2" SB Chev journal dimension. That would give a nice 427 CID with stock bore. Using longer than TA 7.125 rods with off the shelf pistons would make one hell of a revver that would have great top-end for a stock-appearing entry I'd think.

    killer motor

    Lets see...
    .060"overbore x 3.65" destroker = 438ci ,hardblok,girdle,
big bore, bigger valves like 2.2" due to unshrouding, aluminum rods
    7500 rpms YOW!
what a stock appearing killer, and meets maximum cubes.
    When do we start?
Actually,Jim Bell experimented with these destroked motors years ago in some of his roundy-round cars.

    Under the cover of darkness.........

Well guys - speaking theoretically, of course - what do you think of, say, a 400 block bored to a standard 455 cylinder dimension with about maybe a 3.48 stroke.

Top this with the 400 heads and a Stage 1 valve job, if you didn't tear it down, not even the P&G would be able to tell it wasn't a stock 400...:Brow:

    Speaking theoretically, of course......

So who would you guys trust to do this kind of crankshaft work - good quality work and discretion would be equally important.

I know a guy that did my stroker crank. He's ground and welded cranks for many years. The only question is whether he still has access to a crank grinder....

If he does, I bet he'd do it for less than $500 You can't much more discreet than a guy out in nowhere MT doing it. Although proposing it on this BB kinda blows discretion out the window, doesn't it?

Well, I'm just a nobody around here - they'll forget.

'Sides I don't think any of the brand X, Y, or Z CHEATERS read this part of the board anyway....

They do grinding, nitriding,or could even build you a Billet Crank any stroke you want.

Rick Crawford and I called around about having some non-standard buick billet cranks made. Scat had the best price and turn around time. Around $2000 and a min of six being ordered. Bob G. can make main caps and block side bearing spacers so we could run a smaller main journal. The idea is to reduce bear area/dia. This should ease the some of those big buick bearing oiling needs at higher RPM's. The idea is not dead, just the cash flow. What we talked about was stock stroke, 2" rods and 2.5" mains. I think even buick's oiling issue could keep this set up alive to 7500-8000 grand. We even talk about grinding on a 401 crank and trying to make that work.. Just tosing out some of the thinks that go through the Minds :Do No:

    Check this out!

there is a guy in Salt Lake City Utah that runs a destroked stage 2 engines in his sand buggies I guess he has a world record or two in that form. He has built several big/little engines that run very well. His name is Elroy Wilson. I think Mike from TA knows him or of him too.

Don't forget, those big 3.25" mains are there to help keep the block from folding in half. It might do OK with halo girldle and all the other good stuff.
