Will the GEAR SETS and POSI units from the “corporate 10 bolt 8.5”, that have the “c” clip axle retainers, work in the 1971-72 Buick 10 bolt 8.5 that have the bolt in axles?
Yes, everything inside those units will swap. You can use that entire posi carrier. It wi have an area inside the spider gears for the clips to sit but since you don't need no big deal. All the bearings are 100% the same. Hence why the corporation name.......it was universal among gm....... I have done this several times with no issues. I'm sure that might might a an exception somewhere
Great! Thanks, I found 72 Buick 8.5 but since they never came from the factory with posi units wanted to make sure I could use the readily available Chevy units.
I think your info about never coming with posi isn't true. I could be wrong, but I can not see every gs, gto, 442 etc in 72 never had a posi???
I could be wrong, but somewhere I read that Buick’s, even GS models , weren’t set up with posies from the factory. Can anyone confirm that?
That's wrong. The 8.5 was the standard 10 bolt rear in Skylarks and GS'. Some had posi carriers, others did not. I would think most GS' had them. Since the 8.5 was used into the 1990's, and the 8.5 guts all interchanged, you can find the carriers in later model cars and wagons. The only thing that might vary is the axle spline count. http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/posi.htm http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/85rear.htm
That is quite simply incorrect. Limited slip rear ends were standard on the stage cars and optional on everything else.
I guess I needed to write what I meant more clearly: Buick GS models didn’t include posi units in there package from the factory. They had to be special ordered separately. ......good thing is the parts interchange!! Thanks guys.
