Anybody else have an electric fuel pump that sounds like a jet engine? I have a 455 motor and Flowmaster exhaust but I can hear the fuel pump whine over everything else. Any suggestions for a quieter pump?

Get rid of it and switch to a manual fuel pump.

If you have it mounted directly to metal, it's going to resonate throughout the car. MSD makes rubber isolators for their 6A boxes. Maybe try using them.

To start with what fuel pump do you have and where and how is it mounted? How much HP are you making? EFI or carb?

Don't know what kind this is but here is a picture of it. It's mounted to the frame rail directly under the driver's door handle which is probably why it seems so loud to me. Seems to be insulated pretty well it's wrapped in foam and attached by a clamp with rubber on it.

I've only had the car about a month and a half so haven't had it on a dyno yet. It's supposed to be a 455 stage 1 motor but the year is unknown. I would guess it's somewhere around 375 horsepower. It has the sniper EFI system on it.

Try temporarily unbolting it from the frame and then running it. If the sound level becomes more tolerable, you'll know it needs more insulating from the frame mounting.

I got down there and listened to it while it was running and there is no metal on metal vibration noise it's just the pump itself is very loud. Was just wondering if that was standard or if other people were running pumps that were quieter.

It's because of it's location more than anything

Your best bet is to add some sound deadening insulation under the carpet. The only other option is doing a in tank pump setup. To feed a big engine with high PSI fuel pressure takes a pretty big strong fuel pump. I run a $800 electric pump and you sure can hear it!

The car already has insulation under the carpet. Guess it's just one of those things I'll have to get used to. Thanks for all the input.

I agree it is the location more than anything. It's right under you. Normally, the fuel pump would be in the back where the exhaust noise would mask it somewhat. And yes, seems you'll have to get used to it.

Probably pricey, but you may want to think of an in the tank fuel pump would be quieter. I can just about here the one in a tank of my 87 GN.

I'm looking at the bosch 44 pump. Some guys here have said they are using it and bosch says it's near silent. Not sure if the pressure would be too high with it though. Any thoughts?

You should have a fuel regulator either in line or as a part of the EFI throttle body so higher pressure is not much of a worry. Yes you can try another pump.

That's the low psi Porsche pump isn't it?

I'm kinda anxious to hear my new pump,(but it will be mounted in the trunk)for my car. I had a Holley Blue and red pump on my car with the 462 and I really didn't notice a sound, but again, they were mounted in the rear of the car. That being mounted just below the door would surely be noisy. I would consider moving it elsewhere as others suggested..

Thanks for all the input. However I just drove it today and the fuel pump being loud is the least of my concerns now. Now I have some sort of fuel pickup issue. I seem to only be able to get 40 or so miles out of a tank before it starts sputtering like it's running out of gas. It's done this twice now. I ran it until it started sputtering and then went to a gas station last night and it only took 10 gallons to fill it up. Today I drove it and it didn't even make it 40 miles before it started sputtering and quickly died on me on the road. Luckily I had a 2 gallon gas can with me just in case because the fuel gauge is currently not working. I got about a gallon and a half back in it and it fired right up and got me home. I left it running when I got home and it only took a couple minutes for it to start sputtering again. I could hear the fuel pump still trying to run as the car was sputtering. I don't think the fuel pump is the problem because as soon as you fill it up with gas it runs fine for about 40 miles. It's almost like the fuel pickup isn't at the bottom of the tank anymore. Any thoughts on this one?

Drain and drop the tank. Sucks now that shes full. Pull the pickup and check the sock and all connections
