The rear brakes on my late fathers 65 skytop wagon are tighting up too much I tried replacing the adjusters and the bottom spring (see J-peg A443) I checked the Buick book and this shows correct but the brakes are still dragging and getting the drums very warm My late father over 20 years ago mentioned that the brakes were tighting up and he did something to stop them from dragging and it worked for 20 years until just lately they are giving me problems If you see J-peg A448 this is what my father had on all 4 wheels for the adjusters and it did not have the dragging problem BUT the adjuster would fall out and roll around in the drum on ocasion because the spring was too long Can someone tell me which adjuster I should have and if the spring or anything else is missing I should look for (I have a whole pail full or parts) Thanks
Do you have access to a factory shop manual that will show you a good, clean picture of the brakes? You might want to start there. Maybe your local dealer can photocopy one for you. Obviously one of those adjusters is wrong, but you already knew that. They also are left/right, and must be installed the correct way, so be careful digging through your bucket of parts. Put them on wrong, and yes, they will keep self-adjusting tighter and tighter. There should also be a small piece that lays along the teeth on the adjuster, to hold the adjustment. Can you post pictures of the entire brake set-up on each wheel? That might might make it easier for someone on here to help you figure out the problem.
Give me a few days to J-peg every wheel and post I had to loosen the adjustment on the rears so the brakes would not drag so bad and burn the drums I would like to figure out once and for all which adjuster is used on my Wagon I have 23 teeth adjusters on there now
if the brake hardware has been used and overheated, junk them. wagner p/n's; anybody should be able to interchange left side adjuster kit is F98362 right side is F98363 spring kit is F78513 this is for the rear. as always, dont be afraid to spend on stopping. the next person you could hit could be me..ouch john
