Ok, about to get the top done on my 71 Buick GS. My question is that the top place is going to pull my top and give me my car back to paint the convertible top frame. What would be the best way to do this? Should I just go at it with some sand paper and then paint? What kind of paint should I use? Should I spray can it or is there a good quality paint I could brush on??? Let me know what everyone has done with their convertible top frames!! Is there a easy way to remove it possibly and get it powder coated?

Let me know all the angles!!

I'd remove it first. It's not a difficult job, only 2 or 3 bolts on each side, I can't remember for sure, it's been awhile since I've had one apart but you can leave one on each side to support the top, just loosen it and the top frame will lift off of it. You'll see which one I mean. The whole assembly will come right out but you're probably gonna want someone to help you with it so you don't scratch stuff. It's not that heavy, just clumsy.

Next, hang it up securely from your garage ceiling and soak it good with Simple Green. Interior parts are always nasty to repaint because they always get fish eyes if not cleaned and sanded real well. I don't know if every car I've ever worked on had been smoked in or if something else gets on it, but that's been my experience with it. Clean, hose off, blow dry with compressed air, then do it again. Once you figure you have it clean, scuff everything with 3M scotchbrite pads, then clean it again. Paint is going to be your choice. I'd paint it with a gun and some semi-gloss acrylic enamel but if you're not equipped to do that then just use Rust Oleum semi-gloss in a rattle can. It's good paint.
