Convertible top cost?

Question to people who have had their convertible tops replaced recently. I want to get mine replaced and I want to get a feel for how much it would cost. I am aware there are different top manufactures and there are significant price differences between the brands.

Got my first quote and it was $3.65k, including removal/installation, vinyl top, pads, cables, gutter and liner. Replacing the seals would be an additional $650. All for a 74 Lesabre.

I'd say its a 2-3 day process. So, my keyboard judgement is that that is a fair price. Took me 2 > weekends to DIY.

You bring up a a question I have had. I normally like to do things myself. But when it comes to cosmetic stuff, I've learned that I don't have the patience to do cosmetic work and have it come out perfect. My fear if I attempted to do it myself is it would come out wrinkled or otherwise look bad. Given you did your own, how hard is it? Is it something a handy person can attempt on their own for the first time?

It's probably moderate to hard in difficulty. Take your time and watch videos and read up on tips etc

No one wants to work on scissor tops. They bid for the difficulty

If that’s a scissor top I wouldn’t even consider installing one. I helped a guy install a regular top on a car once and that was enough.

Not many people know how to even install them, and here is another thing to consider.

I would not purchase the top until you find the guy that is going to install it. I used to sell convertible tops and every installer had his preference as far as which suppliers top fit best on certain models.

If you buy a top and it is not the one he wants to install, you may end up throwing it away and buying another one.

    That’s my advice.

Based on Chad's and Duane's reply, I am convinced I am right to not try it myself. I do appreciate all the good advice.

My trimmer won't do scissor tops anymore.
    Standard tops are bad enough.

    Yeah,
A few years ago Brad was talking about getting a scissors top put on one of his cars but wasn’t happy about spending the money at that time.

I told him to get it done before all the guys that knew how to install them retired, so that’s what he did.
